The studies in Romance Languages and Literature pursue a threefold objective. They assure a Linguistic course which helps to develop reflection on languages and language, as well as a real mastery of the French language, both oral and written. In the literary domain, they give the students the opportunity to be confronted with a profound analysis of ancient and modern French texts, as well as with the history of French and European literature. Insight into literary creation is also given in the form of a journey through the reappropriation of Belgium's cultural patrimony. These studies, in addition to the above, provide the chance to study and master a second Romance language (Italian or Spanish), all the while familiarising the student with the literature and culture of those two languages. |
This programme is accessible to students who have passed their first study cycle ("candidature") in Romance Languages and Literature, or who hold a diploma judged as being equivalent. Holders of the teacher-training diploma for lower secondary school classes in the subject (French-History) may have access to the programme, subject to the successful completion of the first cycle of studies in a single year. Admission requests must be addressed to the academic supervisor of the programme and must be accompanied by the list of the courses taken and the results obtained. |
The conditions and regular admission procedures are detailed in the "General Information" section of the Web page :
This two year "licence" programme covers a range of subjects which constitute the foundation studies (heading A) and the specialised studies , to be chosen in the context of a specific branch of studies (heading B). |
A thesis relating to a scientific question, in line with the subjects of the branch of studies chosen, is to be submitted at the end of the second year. |
Both for the foundation studies and in the context of the specialised branch of studies, the students are encouraged to orientate a part of their programme in accordance with their own projects and interests, partly thanks to the optional subjects which are available, either on the UCL programme or on that of another university. |
Before the 20th October of each of the two years, the student will submit a programme project to the Department Council. Any student whose programme is not in conformity with the required norms or who does not respect the deadline, risks having his exam registration refused. The programme must total 120 credits for the the full two years. The number of subjects to be chosen from the headings "A. Foundation studies " "B. Branches of special studies" will be made in accordance with the existing rules of the department. |
