Aims

By the end of this course, the students should be able to recognize, read, translate, and analyze an important Medieval literary work studied in the original version.

Main themes

A philological and literary study of long extracts from Medieval Latin authors, studied in the original version: recognizing the text; the text's value as document (the author, the period, the realia); the human value of the text's message (continuities and discontinuities); linear and structural reading; translation of the text, accompanied by an exhaustive commentary.

Content and teaching methods

For students in the licence (second cycle) with a good knowledge of Latin, this course deals with the reading, translation, and complete explication of a Medieval Latin author or Latin work. The explication puts into practice all aspects of textual commentary: grammar and language, metrics, writing techniques, sources, philological critique, realia, biographical, historical, and cultural roots of the work, archival and human value of the message, links with other forms of expression, particularly music, etc. In 2005 - 20064, we will study Carmina Burana.
