 Aims
The aim of the course is to introduce the students to comparative literature, to give them a sense of its goals, its methods, and the theoretical resources at their disposal. The students must show that they acquired the skills advanced in the lectures and that they can reproduce a significant portion of the encyclopedic and methodological studies completed in the course.
Main themes
1. To give the students a historical overview of the birth of the discipline and to introduce them to the theory, the methods, and their areas of application, while furnishing them with the research tools of the discipline.
2. To look at a study of comparative literature and bring out the results; this could be, for instance, a thematic study, or a study of international literary history, or even a music-literature study.
Content and teaching methods
A first theoretical and encyclopaedic part presents the discipline and research fields of comparative literature; a second part studies a particular question, based on examples. The lecture course is given to a large number of students; it is the first and only course introducing them to comparative literature.
