Aims
At the end of the course, the student:
- will master the principal aspects and stages of the history of Spain in the 20th century,
- will be able to situate in its historical context a 20th-century Spanish literary or artistic work.
Main themes
The course presents a historical outline of the 20th century, which stresses the cultural implications of social, economic, and political transformations.
Content and teaching methods
The course alternates outlines of key stages of 20th-century Spanish history with a broad outline of the most significant cultural currents, taking as its starting point each time outstanding works. 1. The Restoration (1875-1923). Cultural File 1: Gaudí; 2. From the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera to the Civil War (1923-1939). Cultural file 2: The Spanish Republic's pavilion at the World Fair in Paris. The careers of J. Miró and P. Picasso; 3. From the beginning of Franco's regime to today (1939-2000). Cultural file 3: The movida and the cinema of P.Almodóvar.

Prerequisite: Advanced Spanish level.
Oral exam in Spanish on the basis of a paper.
