Aims

At the end of the course, the student will be able:
- to situate Spanish works and extracts from works of the 16th and 17th centuries in their historical and literary context,
- to produce a personal analysis of these from the textual and intertextual point of view,
- to identify the philosophical, ideological, and/or political issues underlying the literary works in question.

Main themes

The course offers a panorama of the literature of the 16th and 17th centuries while focusing on the issue of freedom as it arises in the masterpieces of the Renaissance and baroque periods, such as El Lazarillo, El Quijote, or La vida es sueño. It also introduces the question of the actuality of the literature of that time by examining some contemporary rewritings.

Content and teaching methods

The course will alternate lectures and analysis of works, either in the form of extracts (the students will have, from the beginning of the course, a special anthology for this purpose), or in their entirety. They will also have to read entire works and articles of critical and theoretical bibliography.

Evaluation An oral exam based on a written paper.
