Aims
This course aims to further develop students' knowledge of Italian literature and culture and to develop their analytical abilities and literary sensibility.
Main themes
Presentation of theoretical issues on the basis of reading and interpreting key texts of 19th- and 20th-century Italian literature.
With special attention to the birth of theatre and opera, studied as dramatic texts, and the short story.
Students of the "première licence" are expected to read and understand the literary texts examined in the course, as well as the lectures given by the teacher.
Students of the "deuxième licence" will be provided with an extra list of scholarly articles
Content and teaching methods
First term: narration in the theatre and in the cinema. The work of Verga, De Roberto Di Giacomo, and Pirandello. Second term: iconocity and narrativity in the poetry of the 20th century.
The course is given as lectures for the most part. Students are, however, occasionally expected to prepare talks. After a historical and cultural introduction to the subjects chosen, the course will involve an introduction to and an examination of semiotic and post-semiotic methods of textual analysis, followed by in-depth textual analyses.

Prerequisite: A good knowledge of the Italian language.
Evaluation: Oral examination.
