The second study cycle ("licence") in Oriental Languages and Literature : Oriental Philology and History, provides a basic programme in the field of Oriental Studies and focuses on languages, literature, art history, history of thought and analysis of the corresponding societies. |
These studies can lead to either a subsequent specialisation (DEA or PhD), or to the application of another basic degree programme to an oriental domain. |
The "licence" programme in Oriental Languages and Literature is accessible to students who have passed their first cycle of university studies ("candidature", ) from the Arts Faculty of UCL (two years of studies) or who hold any diploma judged as being equivalent. If this is not the case, complements in Linguistics, History Criticism and Literary theory, may be added to the programme. The programme must be approved by the academic supervisor. |
Interpreter/translator candidates for the languages concerned are entitled access to this degree programme, subject to having passed the first cycle of studies ("candidature") in one year at the Arts Faculty of UCL. Interpreter/translator university graduates for the languages concerned are entitled direct access to the programme, subject to an additional 150 hours, maximum, of complementary subjects to the normal cursus. |
The conditions and regular admission procedures are detailed in the "General Information" section on the Web page :
Second cycle of university studies in two years, 95 credits worth of study activities and a thesis (25 credits) which is the object of one single final deliberation. |
Depending on their centres of interest, each student will follow a coherent programme responding to the requirements formulated below. He may be inspired by the models of the programme proposed, for example for the following sections : The Bible and ancient Egypt; Indo-European comparison; Pharaonic Egypt, Copts and Arabs; India and Central/Oriental Asia; the Biblical World ; the Byzantine and Slavic world ; the Aegean-Anatolian World; the Syro-Anatolian World; the Christian Orient ; the ancient Near-Orient and Egypt. |
The programme is composed of five parts : |
a) Languages (48 credits). The second cycle of the degree programme includes the study of at least three languages. During the two years of this programme, the students will twice follow the higher courses in the two languages, and once the higher course of at least one third language. As a consequence, the students must have at least followed the elementary course of the two languages for at least one year before embarking on this programme. The students may likewise choose a language not taught at UCL, but offered in another Belgian University. |
b) General courses (32 credits) |
c) Options (12 credits) |
d) Modern Language (3 credits). A compulsory course of interactive communication at intermediate or advanced level must be chosen from among the following languages : German, English, Arabic, modern Chinese, Spanish, modern Greek, Italian, Japanese, Dutch or Russian. |
e) A thesis (25 credits). This thesis must be in relation with the subject matter of a programme chosen by the student and be approved by the Council of the Orientalistic Institute. |
