Aims
The goal is to undertake a critical analysis of philosophical texts issuing from the Arabic-Islamic cultural sphere.
Main themes
The course consists of a critical reading of texts issuing from the Arabic-Islamic cultural sphere: the aim is to situate the texts in their particular context and to highlight their impact on the history of thought. Since the aim of the course is to allow the students to take up the reading of "Arabic" philosophical texts, the course shall focus on providing the students with the necessary linguistic, philosophical, and historical tools to this end.
Content and teaching methods
The course is based on the reading of texts in Arabic. The texts themselves often change from year to year: we can concentrate on an author, on a problem, an a specific question, on the critiques leveled at falsafa in general or on critiques of a particular point or doctrine, etc. The students prepare a translation that we then discuss together in class. The text is then the object of a philosophical analysis. The aim is to situate the text in its context and to address the problems the text raises for the history of thought.
