Aims

Reaching a deep knowledge in Ancient Arabic and acquiring a sufficient level of lexical items in order to understand the most important classical texts. The student should be able at the end of the lecture to make personal researches in this field.

Main themes

This lecture (advanced level) lasts 2 years. Its content is a thorough study of texts from the classical and postclassical periods (VII-XV c.) mainly in literature, philology, history and geography.

Content and teaching methods

This lecture of advanced level is based on reading and commented translation of Arabic texts written during the Classical and Post-Classical epochs (VII-XV C.).

Prerequisite : having achieved at least one year of elementary classical and/or modern Arabic.
Evaluation : an examination on translation from Arabic into French of classical texts, reading fluently the grammatical vowels which are not written in Arabic scripture and providing the philological and historical explanations.
