Aims
To provide the student with an in-depth knowledge of the development of Japanese society since its origin in order to better understand the pervasive aspects of this culture in present-day Japan. Moreover an introduction to comparative analysis will give the student an opportunity to further Asian studies, and to better understand the differences and commonalities of the development of Japan and the western world.
Main themes
Introduction to political, economic and cultural history of Japan from proto-historic times till the XVIth century. Emphasis will be given to the mix between the Sino-Korean heritage and the originality of this culture, on the one hand, and, on the other hand on the characteristics surviving in contemporary Japan.
