Aims
The course aims at introducing to the history of religious thought in Islam through the study of its main principles and its historical development.
Main themes
Study of Islamic religious thought from a historical point of view and focused on the question of unity and diversity.
Content and teaching methods
The study of main elements of doctrine in Islamic religious thought as well as of the traditional branches of Islam (Sunnism, Shî'a, Khawârij) together with an introduction to Muslim mysticism. The course is illustrated with the reading of texts from the classical times quoted in French translation. The course does not presuppose any knowledge of Arabic.

Prerequisite : none
Evaluation : oral examination on the contents of the course and on the collection of preliminary readings.
Teaching materials : a collection of preliminary readings is distributed at the beginning of the class.
