Aims

To have a basic understanding of the socio-anthropology of present-day Islam.

Main themes

To introduce students to an analysis of Islam as a social and anthropological fact in relation to the comparative sociology of religions and symbolic systems. This analysis will be carried out with particular reference to Moslem populations in Europe.

Content and teaching methods

Content
A brief introduction to Islamic, and to the central issues of its teaching and institutions. Special attention will be focused on the dynamics of Islam in the 19th century, and on a recent history of how Moslem people have been included in European space. A report on the current state of research relating to the sociology and anthropology of Islam. The socio-anthropology of belonging to Islam based on an analysis of individual and collective identities. The sociology of organisations and leaderships. To demonstrate the special features of Islamic organisation, and the contribution of an analysis of this social fact to a general sociology of organisations. The process and presence of the Moslem reality in institutions and in European urban spaces. Transactions and competitions currently taking place. Questions relating to the future of European Islam.
Methodology
This will be a professorial course backed up by a reading file. Videos will be shown, and visits to mosques and association will be organised.
