Aims

The student should be able to read, translate and give a grammatical explanation of a coptic text of average difficulty, using tools as dictionary and grammar.

Main themes

Initiation to the grammar and pratical training of coptic language (sahidic dialect).

Content and teaching methods

a. Theoretical preleminary : morphology and syntax.
b. Reading and analysis of easy texts, then of average difficulty, begining for instance with evangelical passages.
c. Method : magistral course on the theoretical preleminaries. The texts are prepared and explained by the students, then discussed to state more precisely and enlarge the knowledge of grammar.

Other information (prerequisite, evaluation (assessment methods), course materials recommended readings, ...)

No previous knowledge requested ; but knowing greek is useful, and ancient egyptian is complementary.
Evaluation: continuous evaluation through the involvement in the preparation of the lessons, and oral exam at the end of the year.
