Aims
The student will read different examples of texts of Syriac literature (poetic, liturgical, historical, theological texts etc.). He will be capable to read them in non-vocalised form and to analyse their grammatical structures. He will also have a knowledge of the greek-syriac translation literature and its own syntactical and lexical specificities. At the end of the year he will become familiar with the paleography and the reading of Syriac manuscripts.
Main themes
Presentation of different types of texts of the Syriac literature, their vocalisation, reading and grammatical analysis. Special attention is given to the greek-syriac translation literature and their alterations of classical Syriac grammar. Manuscripts of different value will be studied.
Content and teaching methods
The target of the two years course is to widen the grammatical an literary knowledge of Syriac language. Non vocalised texts of different literary genre will be read as well as paleographic examples of manuscripts. Special attention will be given to the specific interests of the students and to scientific projects in work at the Institut.

Prerequisite : GLOR 1641-1642 (GLOR 1819) or adequate knowledge of Syriac language.
Evaluation : oral examen in the end of the year : analysis and translation of a Syriac text which has not been read during the course.
Teaching materials : grammars and dictionnaries ca be used.
