Aims
The conference is aiming at leading the student to :
1) Ability to read (without written vowels) and translate (into French) Arabic books and newspapers (written in
Modern Literary Arabic).
2) Ability to speak non-Literary Arabic, i.e. spoken Arabic of the Middle-East, especially spoken Syrian Arabic very
widespread in the mentioned area.
3) Ability to speak non-Literary Arabic, i.e. spoken Arabic of the Maghreb, especially spoken Moroccan Arabic.
Main themes
1) Taking further Arabic grammar the bases of which have been taught by Prof. P. Hanjoul : the complex sentence,
derived triliteral verbs their meanings and syllabic structure. The "weak" verbs having w/y as a radical
consonant. Noun structure. Two and three cases declension. From comparative to superlative. Nouns of number.
Pronouns. Invariable nouns. Practice of Arabic grammar in Arabic.
2) Study of General Arabic Dialectology. Diglossia in Arabic. Oriental and maghrebine Arabic.Phonology, morphology
and syntax of Near Eastern Arabic.
3) Phonology, morphology and syntax of Maghrebine Arabic.
Content and teaching methods
ARAB1300
Intermediate level
90 hours, 3 hours/week, the whole year;
ISLA 2 and ISLA 2 DC students

Focus on Modern Arabic
Reading and listening comprehension;

1) Structure :
The conference is lectured 3 hours a week during the whole university year curriculum :
- 1 h of Modern Literary Arabic
- 1 h of Oriental Spoken Arabic
- 1 h of Maghrebine spoken Arabic (Ahmed Adrioueche)
The conference is included as a major part in the Arabic and Islamology curriculum at the Institute for Oriental
Studies (FLTR).
2) Contents and method : The conference especially relies on audio-visual techniques and always aims at practicing
conversation, notably for Non-Literary spoken Arabic.
Pre-requisite level :
the students who wish to attend the conference are supposed to have completed the Elementary Arabic curriculum (Prof. P. Hanjoul and G. de Callataÿ).
Evaluation :
examination with written and oral parts.
