Study objectives

The Master's programme in Linguistics aims to provide the students with in-depth training in General and Applied Linguistics. It offers a vast choice from among numerous specialisations. The programme provides an excellent basis for students who are interested in scientific and linguistic research. In addition, this master can likewise orientate the students towards professions in the domains of linguistic engineering, written and oral communication, dictionary work and specialised terminology etc.

The targeted specialisation in General and Applied Linguistics aims to deepen the linguistic knowledge of the student in at least one modern language (French, Dutch, English, German or Spanish) and to develop specific knowledge in one or more domains of Applied Linguistics (learning foreign languages, psycholinguistics, computational linguistics, contrastive linguistics, etc.). This line of studies will finally lead to doctoral research, or to a career in written and oral communication in the wide sense of the term.

Admission conditions

Subject to the conditions fixed by the Faculty authorities, access is entitled to university graduates (or bachelors) or to those enrolled for the final year of their degree course. In the case of the latter, the master's degree can only be obtained after the awarding of the bachelor's degree.

Admission procedures

The University admission and enrolment procedures are detailled in the "General Information" section on the WEB page :
http://www.ucl.ac.be/etudes/programme.html

C. Option (30 credits)

From among the modules mentioned under point B (specialisation in General and Applied Linguistics), the student will choose either :

  • two supplementary modules for 15 credits (in order to attain a total of 60 credits including the speciality and the option);
  • one single supplementary module for a minimum of 15 credits and a maximum of 30 credits (if necessary, the modules chosen under B will be completed by courses from the same module in order to attain a total of 60 credits including the specialisation and the option);
  • 30 credits of courses to complete the modules chosen under B (to attain approximately 2 x 30 credits for the two modules chosen under B)

D. Thesis and apprenticeship (28 credits)

The student will complete an apprenticeship in a research laboratory (in a university or in industry) for a minimum of 7 weeks (14 weeks part-time). A list of teams ready to welcome the students will be available at the secretary's office. Depending on the availability of the research teams, this period will take place preferably during the second semester of the first year or during the first semester of the second year.

The student must present a thesis (50 to 100 pages) on a linguistic subject relating to the subject matter taught in the context of the degree, preferably in the prolongation of his apprenticeship in a research laboratory.
