Aims
Give a theoretical and practical (hands-on) introduction to corpus linguistics.
Main themes
The seminar gives an overall introduction to the field of corpus linguistics, which can be defined as the computerized study of language on the basis of electronic text collections. The following points will be covered: objectives and methods of corpus linguistics; corpus typology (written vs. spoken; monolingual vs. bilingual; etc.); corpus-based studies of lexis, grammar and discourse; software tools for the analysis of electronic texts (concordancers; part-of-speech taggers; parsers; error editors; etc.).
Content and teaching methods
The seminar gives an overall introduction to the field of corpus linguistics. Several sessions will take place in a computer lab so as to enable students to familiarize themselves with the linguistic software tools.
