Aims

The aim of the course is to increase students' awareness of the major stylistic differences between English and French and to develop students' stylistic skills by means of translation exercises.

Main themes

1. analysis of the stylistic differences between French and English
2. increasing students' awareness of the various language registers (colloquial, formal, journalese, technical, literary, etc.) by means of a wide variety of advanced exercises

Content and teaching methods

The aim of the course is to introduce the main stylistic differences between English and French. A variety of stylistic exercises as well as English to French and French to English translations will enable students to put the aspects covered in class into practice and become familiar with the various registers of the English language (colloquial/informal, formal, journalese, etc.)

Exercises are either prepared at home or done in groups in class.

Evaluation : Written exam.
