Aims

The course has the following objectives:
1. Delimit the field of discourse analysis and define it with respect to the related fields of sociolinguistics, pragmatics, etc.
2. Introduce the theoretical framework and apply it to various discourse types (conversation; journalese; etc.)
3. Help students to decode information (critical discourse analysis)

Main themes

- Definition of the scope of discourse analysis; comparison with other fields (stylistics; rhetoric ; pragmatics; sociolinguistics)
- Text typology
- Written vs spoken varieties of discourse
- In-depth analysis of specific genres (journalese, advertising, spontaneous conversation)
- Critical discourse analysis (critical approach to the media)

Evaluation : Students can choose between two forms of assessment.
- written exam (theoretical questions + descriptive and/or critical analysis of texts).
- extended essay written individually or in groups of maximum 2 students followed by oral defense.
