Aims

By the end of the course the student should be able to express a critical view on theoretical approaches in Dutch linguistics

Main themes

A critical approach to the main stream trends in Dutch linguistics is presented: traditional grammar, structuralist approaches, generative approaches, functional approaches and cognitive approaches. The goal of this course is to enhance the comprehension of the lexical and grammatical structure of Dutch by applying various theoretical insights to practical examples of Modern Dutch.

Content and teaching methods

The course starts with a critical presentation of the basic terminology in Dutch linguistics. Then, the different schools in Dutch linguistics are presented : traditional grammar, structural approach, generative approach, functional approach and cognitive approach. The goal of this course being a better insight in the grammatical and lexical structure of Dutch through the application of theoretical insights to concrete examples. The course is taught in Dutch

Prerequisite: good proficiency in spoken and written Dutch
Oral examination at the end of the course
