Study objectives

The master's programme of Ancient Languages and Literature : "Oriental" orientation, is destined for university degree holders from another field who wish to acquire complementary training in the domain of Oriental Studies relating to the ancient Eastern Mediterranean (Egypt and the Near East, the Biblical World, Byzantium and Christian East, Semitic and Indo-European studies), Islam and the Arab world or India and the Far East.

Admission conditions

Access is entitled to students possessing a university degree from the Faculty of Arts or a degree judged to be equivalent, subject to the conditions fixed by the Faculty authorities. Students enrolled for the final year of their degree course are also entitled access. In the case of the latter, the master's degree is only obtainable one year after having been awarded the graduate or bachelor's degree. Prerequisite : the students must have followed the one year elementary course of the languages they have chosen in the context of the master's programme.

General structure of the programme

One year programme (60 credits) consisting of :

1. Core syllabus :

  • languages (15 credits);
  • end of course project (15 credits). This piece of work must be related to the subject matter of a programme chosen by the student and must be approved by the academic supervisor.

2. An option linked to the linguistic choice (30 credits) :

  • Oriental Studies
  • Islam and the Arab world
  • India and the Far East

Presentation of a written piece of work in the context of the course followed.

2. Option

a) Oriental Studies (30 credits)

In accordance with the languages chosen, the student will follow a coherent programme depending on his centres of interest. This programme will pertain to the following fields : Ancient Egypt and Ancient Near-East, the Biblical world, Byzantium and the Christian East, Semitic and Indo-European studies.

This programme must be approved by the academic supervisor of the degree course.
