Aims

Thorough knowledge of the grammar of the ancient Georgian language (morphology and syntax) and mastering of a vocabulary adequate to the reading of texts; knowledge of the linguistic and grammatical phenomena peculiar to texts translated from Greek into Georgian; introduction to paleography, to the study of manuscripts, to the history of the Georgian language in the middle ages. The student who has followed the advanced level course for two years must be able to launch a personal research on ancient texts in Georgian.

Main themes

The course focuses on the literary texts written in ancient Georgian or translated from Greek into the ancient Georgian language, including the study of the manuscripts preserving these texts and the preparation of a critical edition.

Content and teaching methods

Reading of and commenting upon literary texts written in ancient Georgian or translated from Greek into the ancient Georgian language. The study of the texts is an opportunity for giving the student an introduction to the history and the culture of the Georgian people, to the paleaography of the Georgian script and the reading of manuscripts, and to prepare them for a personal research in the field of Georgian studies. Being an initiation to a research activity, the course requires from the student an involvement in the preparation of the lessons.

Prerequisite : GLOR 1651-1652 (GLOR 1815) or adequate knowledge of the ancient Georgian language.
Evaluation continuous evaluation through the involvement in the preparation of the lessons, and oral exam at the end of the year.
Teaching materials : texts and documents provided by the teacher.
