Aims

The aim of the course is to present the administrative system of the byzantine empire from the 4th to 15th century, by examining those roman, greek and oriental aspect which characterise the byzantine empire.

Main themes

The course consists of a presentation of all the important sectors of byzantine administration : the emperor and his powers, the important centralised services, the administration of territories, the army, the justice, the finance and the taxation, and so on. Certain particular themes will be developed, based principally on extracts from greek and latin translations. The course complements that of Byzantine History.

Content and teaching methods

Extensive course based on the available sources which analyses first the functionning of Byzantine Empire through its history : concept of Imperial Power, relations between Church and Emperor, imperial administration. A particular theme is developped afterwards according to the students interest such as : Teaching, Education, Society, Women's condition, Law, Science, Superstition ...

Prerequisite: Nil. This course is complementary with Byzantine History GLOR 2540
