Aims

Reach some sufficient knowledge to be able to translate (with a dictionary) any text of documents discovered in Qumrân or of all the Targums.

Main themes

Comparison of the different Targums of the Genesis, with analysis of the special forms of the Neofiti, of Pseudo-Jonathan, of the Palestinian fragmentary Targums and of the Samaritan Targums.
According to the educational background and the request of the students, we will do some translations of some extracts of Aramaic texts of the Qumrân and there will be an introduction to the Samaritan language.

Content and teaching methods

Application of the grammar, with comparison with Hebrew. Comparison of the different Aramaic dialects of the first century BC up to the 6th century A.C. Study of the theological meaning of the Aramaic paraphrases compared with the original Hebrew one.
Comparison of the different Targums of the Genesis, with analysis of the special forms of the Neofiti, of Pseudo-Jonathan, of the Palestinian fragmentary Targums and of the Samaritan Targums.
According to the educational background and the request of the students, we will do some translations of some extracts of Aramaic texts of the Qumrân and there will be an introduction to the Samaritan language.

Prerequisite : elementary knowledge of Aramaic or having followed the courses GLOR 1641-1642 (GLOR 1808).
Evaluation : oral exam.
Texts and books : "Biblia Polyglotta" de Madrid. Texts will be handed out to the students by the professor.
