Aims
The lectures want to give a notion about the Syriac literature and its different literary branches, as well as to show its significance for other Christian communities and the Islamic world.
Main themes
History of the Syriac churches from 2nd to 14th Centuries. The use of grammars, dictionaries and handbooks relvant for Syriac literature. Introduction to the most important authors, works and translations in Syriac language.
Content and teaching methods
The student will acquire a general knowledge about the principal genres and epochs of the Syriac literature as well as about its most important authors. Special attention will be made on the relation of Syriac to other Christian literatures in the Orient.

Prerequisitie : the knowledge of Syriac language is not requiered.
Evaluation : the student has to write a short text about a special literary item of the Syriac literature.
