Aims

The student should be able to make personal researches on Christian Arabic texts from Near and Middle East, especially being able to prepare a critical edition.

Main themes

This lecture is based on a thorough study of pratistical and literary texts of Christian Arab communities living in Near and Middle Orient. It should be attended only by students who have a good level in Classical or Modern Arabic. This good level is required in order to translate and study problems of Arabic codicology.
After having been prepared (GLOR 1807) to read and understand Arabic manuscripts, the student should be able to practice the technique of critical edition of Middle Arabic texts.

Content and teaching methods

This lecture is based on a thorough study of the literature, notably the religious one, written by Christian Oriental Arabs. A basic knowledge of the Arabic grammar is required before understanding these texts which are read, commented and translated into French. The various techniques of critical edition are practiced during this lecture.

Prerequisite : At least one year of classical and/or modern Arabic ans having passed the examination on the first level in Middle Arabic, i.e GLOR 1807.
Evaluation : reading in Arabic and translating into French.
Teaching materials : texts on photocopies and text processing.
