Winfab is the technological platform dedicated to micro- and nano-fabrication within the science and technology sector (SST) of the Université catholique de Louvain (UCL). The platform maintains a 1000 m2 cleanroom infrastructure spread on two levels, with a large high-tech equipment fleet (more than 50 machines), and offers an access to a wide range of advanced techniques for thin-films deposition, thin-films etching, surface patterning, micromachining and back-end processes. Originally focused on silicon microelectronics technology, Winfab is a now multidisciplinary platform active in various research and technological fields, including SOI (silicon-on-insulator) CMOS microelectronics, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), lab-on-chip devices, sensors, solar cells, batteries, bio-technologies, nanoelectronics, 2D materials (graphene, ...), photonics devices, organic electronics, ...

Education

In close relation with the Louvain School of Engineering, Winfab participate to the educative mission of the University by giving students a unique opportunity to get in touch with the world of micro- and nano-fabrication. Through specific courses (ELEC2560 - Micro- and Nano-fabrication) or in the framework of their master thesis, students have the possiblity to work in an advanced cleanroom environement and to experience state-of-the-art micro- and nano-fabrication equipments and techniques.

Research

As a technological platform within the Science and Technology Sector, the main role of Winfab is to support the activities of UCL research groups. Winfab provides to researchers an access to the cleanroom facilities and offers long-term expertise (since 1972) in the field of micro- and nano-fabrication techniques. The Winfab platform is also accessible to researchers from other institutions.

Services to industry

In addition, Winfab also offers to the industry, especially to SMEs, the opportunity to access its state-of-the-art equipments, techniques and know-how to develop novel products and/or improve fabrication processes.
