LIDR Commission des licences en droit (DRT)

Responsable académique : Pierre d'Argent

Study objectives

After the first two-year university study cycle ("candidature"), the "licence" programme in Law has a three-fold objective. It aims, firstly, at further improving the understanding by the future jurist of the technical aspects of different branches of Law : Economic and Social Law, Private Law, Public Law, International Law and Criminal Law. These courses should equip the student with the knowledge he/she shall require in the legal profession.

The second objective consists of promoting a critical reflection about the law, based on the epistemological tools that the students should have acquired thanks to the interdisciplinarity of the "candidature"programme in Law (Philosophy, Economics, History, Sociology and Psychology).

Lastly, the "licence" programme in Law gives the students every opportunity to finish their studies by being, at least, bilingual. Language courses are accessible each year ; law courses in a foreign language are compulsory for all students : the student exchanges between foreign universities are highly encouraged (Erasmus-Socrates programmes and national and international programmes).

Admission conditions

In order to be entitled to enrol for a "licence" programme in Law, the student must hold a first degree in Law ("candidature en droit") or a diploma recognised as being equivalent by the Faculty.

Admission procedure

The University admission and enrolment procedures are detailed in the "Access to Studies" section of the WEB page :
http://www.etu.ucl.ac.be/inscriptions.html

General structure of the programme

Programme content

Interdisciplinary course, "Creating a company"

UCL organises an interdisciplinary course, "Creating a Company," which is integrated into the three year "licence" programme in Law.

For students who register for this course :

  • the first year in Law includes three modules, each with a volume of 15 hours of lectures and 30 hours of interactive teaching : legal, economic and financial aspects of small and medium-sized companies. These modules replace the two practical exercises of the first year programme in Law.
  • the second year in Law includes a seminar : problems linked to creating a company. This seminar replaces the two practical exercises of the second year.
  • the third year includes a thesis : the elaboration of a project to create a company. This thesis replaces the seminar of the third year.

Courses from other study programmes

Students may request authorisation to follow, under the status of optional courses, one or two courses from the programme of the Criminology School of UCL, from the Law Faculty of KULeuven or from another UCL Faculty.

Language courses given at the Institute for Living Languages (ILV)

Students who wish to add an ILV language course to their study programme must introduce a written, justified request, mentioning the course code and the name of the lecturer.

However, beyond cases justified by an exchange project with a foreign language institution, authorisation to follow a language course will only be granted to students on an exceptional basis.

This language course will not be counted in the 240 hours of options but will be added to the student's programme and will be taken into account during the deliberation on the same level as the other courses on the programme.

Internship in legal practice (optional)

Students selected by the Faculty will carry out an internship in legal practice during the third year of the programme. This internship, of a duration of 120 hours, carried out under the control of the Faculty, is equivalent, for students who are enrolled, to 60 hours of options. The result obtained is pondered at 40 points. Students may not enrol both for such an internship and for a student exchange programme.

The student exchange programme (optional)

Students selected by the Faculty will carry out their exchange programme during the second quadrimester of the third year of studies. Exchanges conducted at the Complutensia University of Madrid and in Utrecht have a duration which corresponds to the whole academic year.

The study programme followed in the host university, duly approved by the academic exchanges supervisor, is equivalent to 150 hours of options.

Evening programme

The Faculty organises a "licence" programme in Law with a staggered timetable, destined for law candidates who are unable to follow the ordinary day time-programme for a valid reason (e.g., because of a professional activity).

This is a full university programme which leads to an academic degree in Law and is spread over three academic years.

All the courses of the "licence" programme in Law on this staggered timetable are triennal and are grouped into three modules according to subject classification. The modules are taught successively and are followed by all the students during the year they are taught. In any case, two courses are taught each year and are reserved for 1st year students.

The courses are given Mondays to Thursdays from 6 00 p.m. to 9 00 p.m.
