Aims
Through the study of the free movement regimes, to highlight the basic common legal principles of the Community legal system.
Main themes
The course sets out a synthesis of the legal regime of the Internal Market, with the exclusion of the free movement of persons and of the rules on competition (separate courses).
The following items are thus covered: free movement of goods, services and capital, EU's common commercial policy, and, as far as possible, introduction to sector-based policies, such as agriculture, transport or the environment.
The main emphasis is on analysing primary legislation. Secondary legislation is more a matter for the specialist subjects concerned (company law, tax law, consumer protection, etc).
Content and teaching methods
The course aims to give students a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms governing the European Community's substantive law. In this respect it favours a synthetic approach, while illustrating the concepts through the case-law of the CJEC.
The course is taught in the form of lectures. Students have a textbook and a case-law compendium at their disposal.
