The four year studies of the PhD programme consist of theoretical and practical courses, clinical courses and periods of apprenticeship as well as options. From the beginning of this programme, the student is introduced to the hospital milieu thanks to the tutorials and internships in the first year.

The basic medical training covers two and a half years, during the course of which the student will complete a three month apprenticeship period. The continuing apprenticeships are grouped together over one and a half years (the second semester of the 3rd year and 2 semesters of the 4th year).

The programme is accessible to holders of the first cycle of university studies diploma ("candidature") in Medecine.

The 1st year of the PhD programme introduces studies in clinical reasoning and the necessary actions needed in terms of diagnosis and therapy. This will continue throughout the 2nd year and the 1st term of the 3rd year. It will be supported by real life cases encountered by the student during the course of his apprenticeships and tutorials. The first year will begin with specific studies in semiology (the identification and recognition of signs and symptoms) which act as a bridge between the "candidature" and the PhD studies. It then goes on to cover the study of pathologies through physiological systems (sectors). In the 1st PhD year, the following sectors are looked at : the cardio-vascular, pneumology, gastro-enterology, infectious diseases and psychiatry sectors.

The special pharmacology and pathological anatomy sectors are taught on parallel lines and in close coordination with the other sectors.

Medical psychology, the study of ethics and deontology, are aimed at the personal training of the doctor who needs to acquire an appropriate attitude towards his patient, the problems of society and his professional milieu. Courses in general medecine parallel to the specialities dominating the different sectors will help prepare the students to choose their career orientation (general medecine or specialised medecine).

The first term covers 9 weeks of course work, 1 week of study-evaluation and 4 weeks of practical training.

Objectives : this course is aimed at helping the students to recognise the clinical signs and symptoms essentially connected with the respiratory system, the cardiovascular system, the abdomen and the neurological system (introduction).

The studies cover the learning and interpretation of common clinical biological tests as well as the principal anomalies in thorax x-rays; an introduction to the concepts of acts of decision-making will also be gone into.

Optional objectives : medical decision strategies.

Objectifs: Surgical semiology and caring for emergency cases constitutes the complement in medical semiology following in the tradition which separates internal pathology and surgical interventions. The latter principally concern organ pathology. This course prepares the student to be able to cope with emergencies and to learn which appropriate medical actions to take. Besides providing initiation into making diagnoses based on the identification of the signs and symptoms, in the case of more specifically surgical pathologies, this course aims to give the students general notions in surgical pathology and physiopathology. In order to prepare himself for the end of semester apprenticeship, the students will also acquire a combination of theoretical and practical knowledge which will help them to learn - with no risk of harm to their patients - the necessary rudimentary medico-surgical techniques and nursing techniques

Optional objectives : anaesthesiology, research methodology in surgery, algology.

Objectives : to familiarise the student with the different anamnestic and clinical signs which vary according to age and growth to help him diagnose pathological cases. To develop the fundamental notions of pediatrics through the study of the somatic, mental and emotional development of a normal child. Also to familiarise the student with the main syndromes related to pediatrics.

Objectives: to help the student become sensitive to the reality of the doctor-patient relationship and to develop the importance of the psychological and psychosocial dimensions involved here.

Objectives: to train future doctors in the contextual dimensions of medical practice. As well as the concrete problems encountered during the practical work experience periods, the ethical, deontological and juridical aspects, together with the community concerns will also be analysed.

Optional objectives : hospital medecine, health and development, analysis of parallel medecines, instructing the patient about his illness and medical information.

The student must choose between Dutch and English (a choice to be made for the 1st and 2nd doctoral (PhD) years).

Objectives: these courses focus on the interaction between the doctor and the patient (consultation, diagnosis, treatment) ; with practice via role-plays (telephone contact, appointments, welcoming a patient and responding to his questions). The main aim here is to foster the integration of the relevant vocabulary for consultations for becoming acquainted with a new medical case.

Groups of 2 to 4 students are entrusted to a particular lecturer from the first year of the PhD programme, for a minimum of 2 hours a week during course time, for the purpose of clinical activities (discussion of a case prolonged in the way of bibliographical research, initiation into clinical examinations...).

During the course of a 4 week period of apprenticeship in a general medical practice or a general hospital service, the student will participate in various clinical activities to give him the opportunity to put his training in semiology and clinical studies into practice. Here, he will come face to face with the human and medical problems that will be the basis of reflection and analysis during his studies to come.

Clinical apprenticeship seminars are organised to help give the students maximum support for their practical experience.

The second term comprises 10 weeks of course work and 2 weeks of study-evaluation.

Objectives: to initiate the students in the discovery and recognition of cardiac and vascular pathologies (cardiac insufficience, rhythm disturbace, thorax pains, varical veins) as well as in the methods and principal techniques relating to cardiac exploration (adults and children). Also to introduce them to a coherent approach to treatement.

Optional objectives: cardiac surgery, complements in vascular diseases, pediatric cardiology.

Objectives: Studies in rudimentary notions of pulmonary, pleural and mediastinal pathologies. Priority is given to common complaints in general medecine and to rarer complaints if they are linked to high morbidity-mortality or if they are directly concerned by the diagnostic differentials. These studies also aim to provide the students with the physiopathological and epidemiological bases relevant for the understanding and recognition of respiratory complaints..

Optional objectives: complements in pneumology, complements in clinical allergology.

Objectives: Studies in the clinical approach to patients with a temperature (fever) or other indication of an infectious disease. Also learning how to criticise the diagnostic value of infectious symptoms. Helping the student know what kind of reaction to take when faced with a feverish adult or child patient. Learning in which circumstances antibiotics should be prescribed, what kind, and how to evaluate the results. Learning how to give a detailed description of the clinical evolution, complications and treatment of multisystemic infectious diseases.

Operational objectives: tropical hygiene, laboratory use strategies and therapies in infectious pathology, complements in tropical pathology.

The third term comprises 9 weeks of course work and 3 weeks of study-evaluation.

Objectives: to provide the essential physiopathological, diagnostic and therapeutic elements for digestive complaints. The relative importance given to the different chapters will both dictated both by the incidence of the pathologies considered and for less common complaints, via the prognostic consequences of an appropriate diagnosis and/or treatment.

Optional objectives: complements in gastro-enterology, complements in surgical pathology of the digestive system, complements in the surgical pathology of the digestive system of children.

Objectives: Presentation of the main psychopathological syndromes for the different ages of life. Focus is placed on the most common complaints, either associated to somatic pathologies or in isolation. This course constitutes a general introduction to psychiatric problems, both on the level of diagnosis and of treatment.

Optional objectives: psychosomatics (medical functional pathologies, systemic and comportamental psychotherapy), child psychiatry.

Objectives: to help the student become capable of mastering the existing concepts of general medecine and knowing what is involved and at stake in the context of primal care. To help him become familiar with the specificities of the role of the general practicioner and his integration in the health-care system. To help him understand the central position of the general practicioner within all of the health-care systems, the role of preventative care, curative care and rehabilitation as well as the necessity to be registered within the networks responsible for dealing with health care. To help him realise what is involved in opting for a specialisation or for general family medecine.

During the course of the 2nd PhD year, the student will acquire the rudimentary notions of uro-nephrological, gyneco-obstetrical, endocrinal, hematological and locomotor system pathologies.

Parallel to the lectures, clinical seminars are organised in big auditoria and in small groups, aimed at supporting the student in the context of his self-study, tutorials and two month period of apprenticeship.

The contextual aspects (deontology, ethics, social implications) as well as training in relationships, general medecine, a language and the studies initiated in the 1st PhD year are pursued in the 2nd PhD year.

Elements of legal medecine are also taught in this year..

The first term comprises 13 weeks of course work and 1 week of study-evaluation

Objectives : to provide the physiopathological, diagnostic and therapeutic elements essential for gynecological complaints. Also to provide the physiological and pathological elements linked to pregnancy and related complications. The relative importance given to the different chapters will be dictated by the incidence of the pathologies considered. For less common problems or for problems arising during pregnancy, the kind of diagnosis and appropriate teatment to be given will be discussed.

Optional objectives: complements in gynecology and infertility, complements in andrology and a chapter on vitro fertlisation and foetal complications.

Objectives: Studies in rudimentary notions of the main uro-nephrological pathologies (kidneys, urinary tracts and male genitals), by focusing on the most common diseases and those that are most important in terms of morbidity - mortality, bearing in mind any particularities depending on age (pediatric, adult and geriatric sections). Emphasis is placed on an integrated medico-surgical approach which systematically covers the diagnostic aspects (in hospitals; imaging and anatomo-pathological support and aspects of existing treatment, all the while insisting on the necessity for ongoing training..

Optional objectives: complements in urology, complements in nephrology

Objectives: to introduce the specificities of hospital care and medical decisions in general medecine, from the registering of the complaint to the solving of the patient's problems. To define the specific role played by the general practicioner within these procedures, characterised by the integration of multiple pathologies and sometimes complex or even antagonistic forms of treatment, keeping in mind the external context and determining factors.

Objectives: the reinforcement of the training of the future doctors in the contextual dimensions of medical practice is one of the priority objectives fixed by the Medical Teaching School Committee. At the end of the 2nd PhD year, the student will have had the possibility to formulate and analyse a health problem related to his clinical practice, in depth. He will have learned how to access and exploit documented sources to best formulate questions of an ethical, deontological and social nature, brought to the fore by this health problem. He will have the opportunity to discuss all of this with his peers.

Objectives: introduction to the legal dimensions, especially of a judicial nature, involved in medical activities, as well as to the requirements and implications of opinions and certificates, and more particularly in the case of concrete evaluation of the nature and consequences of injury and damage and cause of death.

Objectives: in the 1st PhD year, the future doctor had to choose a language course : either English, or Dutch.15 hours were given in the first PhD year and the other 15 hours in the 2nd year. The objective purused is identical : these courses focus on the interaction between the doctor and the patient (consultation, diagnosis, treatment) ; with practice via role-plays (telephone contact, appointments, welcoming a patient and responding to his questions). The main aim here is to foster the integration of the relevant vocabulary for consultations or for becoming acquainted with a new medical case.

Groups of 2 to 4 students will be entrusted to a lecturer of the 2nd PhD year, for 20 hours to be given from the beginning of the academic year to the end of the 2nd term, for hospital activities (discussion of particular cases prolonged by bibliographical research, initiation in clinical exams, etc.).

The second term comprises 4 weeks of apprenticeship, 7 weeks of course work and 1 week of study-evaluation

During a 4 week period of apprenticeship, the student will participate in various hospital activities so that he can put the training acquired from the specific sector of studies in semiology, hospital care and medical knowledge into practice. Here, he will encounter human and medical problems that will constitute matter for reflection and analysis during his ensuing study periods.

Apprenticeship seminars are organised to give the students more support

Objectives: to provide the students with physiopathological, diagnostic and treatment elements essential for complaints with the locomotor system. Focus will be placed on the most common problems, on their differential diagnosis and on the importance of a pluridisciplinary approach.

Optional objective: complements in orthopedics and traumatology, complement in rhumatology, motor rehabilitation and complements in physical medecine.

Objectives : to help the student become sensitive to the reality of the doctor-patient relationship and to develop the importance of the psychological and psychosocial dimensions of this

The third term comprises 4 weeks of apprenticeship, 5 weeks of course work and 3 weeks of study-evaluation

Objectives : to initiate the students into the physiopathology, diagnoses and treatment of endocrinal complaints in the main context of hospital care. From this perspective, to teach, in a concrete way, the essentials that no doctor can afford not to know in diabetology and in general endocrinology, especially in the domains of the hypophysis, the thyroid, the adrenal glands and diseases linked to nutrition.

Optional objectives: complements in endocrinology, nutrition diseases and internal secretion glands and nutrition and diet diseases.

Objectives: the course on Haematology is aimed at teaching the main haematological syndromes proper to adults and children, i.e. :

1. To describe haematological dieases, either constitutional or acquired (especially the different forms of anaemia, neutropenia and thrombopenia), ganglion pathologies and malignant acute or chronic haemopathies.
2. To look at the rational use of blood and its derivations.
3. To develop notions concerning coagulation and haemostatic pathologies.

The objectives of the course on Oncology are as follows :

1. To provide the future doctor with the indispensable knowledge to avoid any negligent diagnosis.
2. To initiate him into the art of dialogue with cancer patients.
3. To instruct him in the principals of modern treatment possibilities which must be harmoniously integrated into treatment strategies.
4. To give him the means to cope with cancer emergencies which are all too often still a prominent feature in the case of these patients.

Those studies acting as reminders for students of the sector content of the 1st year are given in the form of apprenticeship seminars during the course of the two month internship period.

The sixth year successively comprises a semester of theory and a complete semester of apprenticeships some of which are compulsory and some recommended.

The apprenticeship periods include hospital internships. These are carried out successively in surgery, internal medecine, pediatrics and gynecology-obstetrics either in university hospitals or in Belgian or foreign hospital services approved by the Faculty.

Depending on the choice of studies (different branches of studies), the students can prepare to opt for a distinct orientation: general medecine, specialised medecine or others (research, public health, industrial medecine).They will not confirm their definitive choice of orientation until the end of their sixth year of studies for general medecine and at the end of their compulsory and recommended apprenticeships for the other specialities. The students who opt for the general medecine orientation must register at the CUMG as from the beginning of the 4th PhD year.

The students who opt for the specialised medecine orientation will submit their optional apprenticeship application and register for the exam during the month of November of the 4th PhD year.

The students who choose another orientation ( industrial medecine, public health, research ) or who are without orientation, must make themselves known before the beginning of the recommended apprenticeships to the Faculty and to the secretary responsible for the apprenticeships. In addition, the students who choose the public health orientation must contact the secretary of the School of Public Health, and those who choose the biomedical research orientation must contact the Committee for research students.

The compulsory courses run from 20th September to 26th November, 2004.

During the course of the 1st semester of the 3rd PhD year, the student will complete his basic studies with compulsory course.

He will personalise his studies by choosing a specific branch of studies and options.

For the students who wish to orientate themselves towards public health jobs other than that of industrial medecine, no prerequisite is obligatory.

Their programme will be one of the two study branches, general medecine or specialised medecine.

It is, however, advisable that they choose a collection of options to do with their future orientation from among the courses offered by the 2nd cycle programme of complementary studies in quantative methods and health sciences (ESP 2DC), or from the list of courses offering training in the domain of social medecine or preventative medecine

Courses from the certificate in gerontology programme (GERO 2CE) are equally accessible in the form of options to PhD students in Medecine.

The full-time apprenticeships begin in January.

During the 2nd semester of the 3rd PhD year and the1st semester of the 4th year, the student will do 6 periods of 2 months of apprenticeships (4 periods of compulsory apprenticeships and 2 periods of recommended ones).

The compulsory apprenticeships are divided up as follows :

• Medecine (adults) : 2 months
• Medecine (children) : 2 months
• Gynecology-obstetrics : 2 months
• Surgery : 2 months.

The students must do 2 periods of 2 months of so-called recommended apprenticeships of which the list covers all of the medical specialisations.

The catalogue of apprenticeships, the " maîtres de stages" (training supervisors) and apprenticeship centres is available at the Administration Office for the apprenticeships. The apprenticeship activities are documented in a special note-book and evaluated on official formulae given to the student.

Special support seminars are organised in the different departements including :

The internal reglementation is given to the students as from the 2nd year of studies. This governs the practical procedures for the apprenticeships. Apprenticeships in developing countries are only accessible to the students who have successfully completed the course on tropical hygiene (MED 2180) and the course on health and development (MED 2260) or another course approved by the person in charge of the apprenticeships in developing countries (M. Malengreau), in such a way that a total of 45 hours is attained.

The administration office for the apprenticeships will examine whether the obligations concerning the apprenticeships have been fulfilled on the basis of the student's application and will inform the jury of the 3rd year of any lacks and absences noted during the course of the 2nd semester of this year.

At the end of each of the obligatory apprenticeships, the student must do an important clinical exam which will globally evaluate the theoretical and practical knowledge of the subject concerned. The marks of these exams will be examined during the deliberation of the fourth year of studies.

The students and doctors wishing to obtain the certificate attesting the ability to interprete electro-cardiogrammes, will follow this course :

The certificate will be awarded to students who have obtained a minimum of 14/20 in the exam.

In order to respond to the requirements imposed on doctors wishing to work with "ONE" consultations, the Faculty of Medecine organises a complementary course of 30 hours in the domain of preventive medecine in infants and young children.

This course is also accessible :

• to general practicioners, subject to registering on an isolated course at UCL and to general practicioners doing a specific complementary training course at UCL (DES in general medecine)
• to pediatricians training at UCL, without registering (optional course),
• to DES students in public health

A certificate is officially delivered by the Faculty of Medecine to the doctor in medecine diploma holder who has obtained a minimum of 12/20 in the exam.

The students and doctors in medecine wishing to obtain ministerial approval for using x-rays for the purpose of medical diagnoses or x-ray guided treatment in the context of their speciality, will follow these courses :

In addition, the candidates will have to do an apprenticeship of 4 weeks in a service of medical imaging recognised by the Teaching Committee. For the RDGN 3120 course and the apprenticeship, special derogations can be granted by the Teaching Committee for specialist doctors or specialist candidates in certain areas including cardiology, pneumology, gastro-enterology, rhumatology, anesthesiology, orthopedic and vascular surgery, neurology and neurosurgery.

The seventh year can be followed in one of the 4 following orientations :

This orientation prepares the student for the specialised study diploma in general medecine. The students who opt for this orientation must be registered at the university Centre of general medecine (CUMG) from the beginning of the 4th year(September), in order to validate the specific intra curriculum training course.

The selection of doctors for general medecine is limited by the quota published in the Royal Decree relating to the planning of the medical offer of 30/05/2002, published in the "Moniteur belge" of 14/06/2002.

The second semester calendar for the students choosing the orientation in specialised medecine is adapted to the requirements linked to the selection procedure for the future specialist candidate doctors.

The number of available openings for the specialisits is determined by the quota published in the Royal Decree relating to the planning of the medical offer of 30/05/2002 published in the "Moniteur belge" of 14/06/2002. Access to a speciality is based on the results of the selection exams.

The students register for the speciality exams via the President of the Selection Committee concerned, at the beginning of the 2nd semester of the 4th year To ensure the smooth organisation of their apprenticeships, prior to the exams, they must submit their apprenticeship programme to the Administration Office for the apprenticeships as from the month of November of this same year.

This orientation is open to students wishing to pursue a career in research. The programme is managed by the Research Student Committee.

For these students, the second semester of the 4th year will consist of full-time apprenticeships in one or several research laboratories of the Faculty.

The programme, composed by the student and his promoter, will be submitted to the President of the Research Student Committee, before 1st December. . For 20th December, the whole of the programme will have been approved by the Committee who will inform the student, his promoter and the President of the 4th year committee of their decision.

A common core syllabus in the different domains of public health can serve as a basis for a whole series of future professional activities (and possibly complementary training courses).

These widely diverse activities are different from the basic medical training course and focus is placed on preventative rather than curative medecine, on a "programmes and populations" approach rather than on "care and individuals" and on the function of an expert rather than a therapist.

It is the Public Health School that delivers the 2nd and 3rd cycle courses in the different domains of interest to public health.

The students may have the apprenticeships they have completed valued after their sixth year of medical studies in the context of their specific training in general medecine if they register at the CUMG (University Centre of General Medecine) and follow a programme organised by the CUMG (European Directive 93/16/CE of 05/04/1993).

Hospital apprenticships organised and approved by the CUMG. Students of this orientation must choose their recommended apprenticeships from the list approved by the CUMG.

Six months of apprenticeship in general medecine, including 3 months with a training supervisor (" maître de stage") in general medecine, nominated by the Faculty. The rest is divided between 1 to 3 months maximum under the supervision of a person in charge of this training, chosen by the student, and/or 1 month's external pedagogical apprenticeship in general medecine.

The interactive studies and practical work experience is organised, during the second semester, on the return day , on Fridays.

These studies include the following courses which are only accessible to the students who carry out their apprenticeships in general medecine in the context of the CUMG, during this semester :

The jury for general medecine meets between the end of May and mid-June.

On completing their studies, the students following the general medecine orientation must have done a total of 200 hours of courses organised by the CUMG which constitute the necessary prerequisites for all training in post-curriculum general medecine.

During the 1st semester of the 4th year, the student will complete the obligatory and recommended apprenticeships started during the 2nd semester of the 3rd year. He will finish his 4 important clinical exams.

The evaluation of these apprenticeships and exams will be subject to a partial pre-deliberation, in January.

The 2nd semester of the 4th year and an orientation semester, already prepared for during the 3rd year, in accordance with the branch of studies selected.

The second semester comprises 6 months of apprenticeship. The student must do the apprenticeship in the speciality/ies he is applying for. In fact, for the future specialists, it is during the course of this semester that the special selection exams (" concours ") take place for the selection of the specialised candidate assistant doctor clinicians (MACCS).

Students wishing to specialise in stomatology or maxillo-facial surgery, must be selected for the access exams for this speciality, before being able to begin this course.

Students wishing to complete their 200 recognised hours, so that they may reorientate towards general medecine in the case of not being selected after the specialist access exams, must follow a course approved by the CUMG.

For students choosing this orientation, the 2nd semester of the 4th year will consist of full-time apprenticeships in one or several laboratories of the Faculty of Medecine.

They may, if they so wish, follow a collection of courses chosen in accordance with their scientific interest (possibly from another Faculty). This programme (apprenticeship and course work), composed by the student and his promoter, will be sent to the Committee President for the 4th year and to the President of the Committee for research students before the1st December.

The totality of the programme for the 2nd semester of the 4th year will have to be approved by the Committee for research students before 20th December. The Committee will inform the students, his promoter, the President of the 4th year and the Faculty, of the decision.

During the course of the 2nd semester of the 4th year, the student must do at least twice two months of apprenticeship under the supervision of an industrial work apprenticeship training supervisor recognised by the Faculty (please address Professor D. Lison, TOXI 3054, Tel. 02/764.32.20).

For the students choosing this orientation, the 2nd semester of the 4th year includes apprenticeships in institutions responsible for a community health programme (please address R. Tonglet, EPID 3034, Tel. 02/764.33.20), plus apprenticeships in approved medical practices.

The choice of the apprenticeship centres will be determined in accordance with the orientation chosen by the student : community health, health and environment, school medecine, expertise medecine, health education, management and administration of health institutions, epidemiology, clinical research, etc.

At the end of each of the apprenticeship periods, the student must do an important clinical exam which will globally evaluate the theoretical and practical knowledge of the subject discipline concerned. The marks of these exams will be analysed during the deliberation of the 4th year. The jury for the 4th year will deliberate on these marks and the apprenticeship reports.

The final result will be awarded by a study jury which will integrate the study curriculum of the student and the evaluation of the activities of the research student.
