The four year studies of the PhD programme consist of theoretical and practical courses, clinical courses and periods of apprenticeship as well as options. From the beginning of this programme, the student is introduced to the hospital milieu thanks to the tutorials and internships in the first year. |
||
The basic medical training covers two and a half years, during the course of which the student will complete a three month apprenticeship period. The continuing apprenticeships are grouped together over one and a half years (the second semester of the 3rd year and 2 semesters of the 4th year). |
The programme is accessible to holders of the first cycle of university studies diploma ("candidature") in Medecine. |

Specific objective |
|||||
The 1st year of the PhD programme introduces studies in clinical reasoning and the necessary actions needed in terms of diagnosis and therapy. This will continue throughout the 2nd year and the 1st term of the 3rd year. It will be supported by real life cases encountered by the student during the course of his apprenticeships and tutorials. The first year will begin with specific studies in semiology (the identification and recognition of signs and symptoms) which act as a bridge between the "candidature" and the PhD studies. It then goes on to cover the study of pathologies through physiological systems (sectors). In the 1st PhD year, the following sectors are looked at : the cardio-vascular, pneumology, gastro-enterology, infectious diseases and psychiatry sectors. |

The special pharmacology and pathological anatomy sectors are taught on parallel lines and in close coordination with the other sectors. |
|||||
Medical psychology, the study of ethics and deontology, are aimed at the personal training of the doctor who needs to acquire an appropriate attitude towards his patient, the problems of society and his professional milieu. Courses in general medecine parallel to the specialities dominating the different sectors will help prepare the students to choose their career orientation (general medecine or specialised medecine). |

Objectifs: Surgical semiology and caring for emergency cases constitutes the complement in medical semiology following in the tradition which separates internal pathology and surgical interventions. The latter principally concern organ pathology. This course prepares the student to be able to cope with emergencies and to learn which appropriate medical actions to take. Besides providing initiation into making diagnoses based on the identification of the signs and symptoms, in the case of more specifically surgical pathologies, this course aims to give the students general notions in surgical pathology and physiopathology. The sixth year successively comprises a semester of theory and a complete semester of apprenticeships some of which are compulsory and some recommended. |

The apprenticeship periods include hospital internships. These are carried out successively in surgery, internal medecine, pediatrics and gynecology-obstetrics either in university hospitals or in Belgian or foreign hospital services approved by the Faculty. |

Choice of orientation |
|||||
Depending on the choice of studies (different branches of studies), the students can prepare to opt for a distinct orientation: general medecine, specialised medecine or others (research, public health, industrial medecine).They will not confirm their definitive choice of orientation until the end of their sixth year of studies for general medecine and at the end of their compulsory and recommended apprenticeships for the other specialities. The students who opt for the general medecine orientation must register at the CUMG as from the beginning of the 4th PhD year. |

The students who opt for the specialised medecine orientation will submit their optional apprenticeship application and register for the exam during the month of November of the 4th PhD year. |
|||||
The students who choose another orientation ( industrial medecine, public health, research ) or who are without orientation, must make themselves known before the beginning of the recommended apprenticeships to the Faculty and to the secretary responsible for the apprenticeships. In addition, the students who choose the public health orientation must contact the secretary of the School of Public Health, and those who choose the biomedical research orientation must contact the Committee for research students. |

The internal reglementation is given to the students as from the 2nd year of studies. This governs the practical procedures for the apprenticeships. Apprenticeships in developing countries are only accessible to the students who have successfully completed the course on tropical hygiene (MED 2180) and the course on health and development (MED 2260) or another course approved by the person in charge of the apprenticeships in developing countries (M. Malengreau), in such a way that a total of 45 hours is attained. |

The administration office for the apprenticeships will examine whether the obligations concerning the apprenticeships have been fulfilled on the basis of the student's application and will inform the jury of the 3rd year of any lacks and absences noted during the course of the 2nd semester of this year. |

At the end of each of the obligatory apprenticeships, the student must do an important clinical exam which will globally evaluate the theoretical and practical knowledge of the subject concerned. The marks of these exams will be examined during the deliberation of the fourth year of studies. |

In addition, the candidates will have to do an apprenticeship of 4 weeks in a service of medical imaging recognised by the Teaching Committee. For the RDGN 3120 course and the apprenticeship, special derogations can be granted by the Teaching Committee for specialist doctors or specialist candidates in certain areas including cardiology, pneumology, gastro-enterology, rhumatology, anesthesiology, orthopedic and vascular surgery, neurology and neurosurgery. |

Introduction |

The seventh year can be followed in one of the 4 following orientations : |
|||||
General medecine orientation |
|||||
This orientation prepares the student for the specialised study diploma in general medecine. The students who opt for this orientation must be registered at the university Centre of general medecine (CUMG) from the beginning of the 4th year(September), in order to validate the specific intra curriculum training course. |
|||||
The selection of doctors for general medecine is limited by the quota published in the Royal Decree relating to the planning of the medical offer of 30/05/2002, published in the "Moniteur belge" of 14/06/2002. |
|||||
Specialised medecine orientation |
|||||
The second semester calendar for the students choosing the orientation in specialised medecine is adapted to the requirements linked to the selection procedure for the future specialist candidate doctors. |
|||||
The number of available openings for the specialisits is determined by the quota published in the Royal Decree relating to the planning of the medical offer of 30/05/2002 published in the "Moniteur belge" of 14/06/2002. Access to a speciality is based on the results of the selection exams. |
|||||
The students register for the speciality exams via the President of the Selection Committee concerned, at the beginning of the 2nd semester of the 4th year To ensure the smooth organisation of their apprenticeships, prior to the exams, they must submit their apprenticeship programme to the Administration Office for the apprenticeships as from the month of November of this same year. |

Biomedical research orientation |
|||||
This orientation is open to students wishing to pursue a career in research. The programme is managed by the Research Student Committee. |
|||||
For these students, the second semester of the 4th year will consist of full-time apprenticeships in one or several research laboratories of the Faculty. |
|||||
The programme, composed by the student and his promoter, will be submitted to the President of the Research Student Committee, before 1st December. . For 20th December, the whole of the programme will have been approved by the Committee who will inform the student, his promoter and the President of the 4th year committee of their decision. |
|||||
Public health orientation (including industrial medecine) |
|||||
A common core syllabus in the different domains of public health can serve as a basis for a whole series of future professional activities (and possibly complementary training courses). |
|||||
These widely diverse activities are different from the basic medical training course and focus is placed on preventative rather than curative medecine, on a "programmes and populations" approach rather than on "care and individuals" and on the function of an expert rather than a therapist. |
|||||
It is the Public Health School that delivers the 2nd and 3rd cycle courses in the different domains of interest to public health. |
|||||
The students may have the apprenticeships they have completed valued after their sixth year of medical studies in the context of their specific training in general medecine if they register at the CUMG (University Centre of General Medecine) and follow a programme organised by the CUMG (European Directive 93/16/CE of 05/04/1993). |

Hospital apprenticships organised and approved by the CUMG. Students of this orientation must choose their recommended apprenticeships from the list approved by the CUMG. |

A. Apprenticeships |
|||||
Six months of apprenticeship in general medecine, including 3 months with a training supervisor (" maître de stage") in general medecine, nominated by the Faculty. The rest is divided between 1 to 3 months maximum under the supervision of a person in charge of this training, chosen by the student, and/or 1 month's external pedagogical apprenticeship in general medecine. |

The interactive studies and practical work experience is organised, during the second semester, on the return day , on Fridays. |

The jury for general medecine meets between the end of May and mid-June. |
|||||
On completing their studies, the students following the general medecine orientation must have done a total of 200 hours of courses organised by the CUMG which constitute the necessary prerequisites for all training in post-curriculum general medecine. |

Other orientations |
|||||
First semester |
|||||
During the 1st semester of the 4th year, the student will complete the obligatory and recommended apprenticeships started during the 2nd semester of the 3rd year. He will finish his 4 important clinical exams. |
|||||
The evaluation of these apprenticeships and exams will be subject to a partial pre-deliberation, in January. |
|||||
Second semester |
|||||
The 2nd semester of the 4th year and an orientation semester, already prepared for during the 3rd year, in accordance with the branch of studies selected. |
|||||
Specialised medecine orientation |
|||||
The second semester comprises 6 months of apprenticeship. The student must do the apprenticeship in the speciality/ies he is applying for. In fact, for the future specialists, it is during the course of this semester that the special selection exams (" concours ") take place for the selection of the specialised candidate assistant doctor clinicians (MACCS). |
|||||
Students wishing to specialise in stomatology or maxillo-facial surgery, must be selected for the access exams for this speciality, before being able to begin this course. |
|||||
Students wishing to complete their 200 recognised hours, so that they may reorientate towards general medecine in the case of not being selected after the specialist access exams, must follow a course approved by the CUMG. |

Research orientation |
|||||
For students choosing this orientation, the 2nd semester of the 4th year will consist of full-time apprenticeships in one or several laboratories of the Faculty of Medecine. |
|||||
They may, if they so wish, follow a collection of courses chosen in accordance with their scientific interest (possibly from another Faculty). This programme (apprenticeship and course work), composed by the student and his promoter, will be sent to the Committee President for the 4th year and to the President of the Committee for research students before the1st December. |
|||||
The totality of the programme for the 2nd semester of the 4th year will have to be approved by the Committee for research students before 20th December. The Committee will inform the students, his promoter, the President of the 4th year and the Faculty, of the decision. |
|||||
Industrial Medecine orientation |
|||||
During the course of the 2nd semester of the 4th year, the student must do at least twice two months of apprenticeship under the supervision of an industrial work apprenticeship training supervisor recognised by the Faculty (please address Professor D. Lison, TOXI 3054, Tel. 02/764.32.20). |

Other orientations in Public Health |
|||||
For the students choosing this orientation, the 2nd semester of the 4th year includes apprenticeships in institutions responsible for a community health programme (please address R. Tonglet, EPID 3034, Tel. 02/764.33.20), plus apprenticeships in approved medical practices. |
|||||
The choice of the apprenticeship centres will be determined in accordance with the orientation chosen by the student : community health, health and environment, school medecine, expertise medecine, health education, management and administration of health institutions, epidemiology, clinical research, etc. |
|||||
Evaluation |
|||||
At the end of each of the apprenticeship periods, the student must do an important clinical exam which will globally evaluate the theoretical and practical knowledge of the subject discipline concerned. The marks of these exams will be analysed during the deliberation of the 4th year. The jury for the 4th year will deliberate on these marks and the apprenticeship reports. |

The final result will be awarded by a study jury which will integrate the study curriculum of the student and the evaluation of the activities of the research student. |
