Aims
Emphasis is laid on technical or cardiac physiology aspects which are not covered by standard courses: the aim of this optional course is to awaken or encourage interest in cardiac surgery by presenting some of its leading-edge technologies.

Main themes
15 hours of lectures, divided between 7h30 of anatomy and surgical techniques and 7h30 of physiology and cardiac resuscitation.

Content and teaching methods
M. GOENEN (5h): pre- and post-operative management (surgical risks, myocardial protection, etc.). PH. NOIRHOMME (1h30): assisted circulation. G. EL KHOURY (4h30): vascular surgery. Y. LOUAGIE (3h): surgery for arrhythmia. J. RUBAY (1h30): paediatric cardiac surgery.
