Study objectives

The second university study cycle programme ("licence") in Oriental Languages and Literature : Arabic Language and Islamology, provides a basic course in all of the aspects of the ancient and contemporary Arabic world, starting with the study of the language, literature and history, and finishing with that of religion and contemporary society.

The studies can lead to a later specialisation programme (DEA), or to the application of another basic programme to an Oriental domain.

Admission conditions

The "licence" programme in Oriental Languages and Literature is accessible to students holding the first university study cycle diploma ("candidature") from the Faculty of Arts (two year programme) or any other diploma judged as being equivalent. Otherwise, complements in Linguistics, in Historical Criticism and Literary Theory, may be added to the programme. The programme must be approved by the academic supervisor.

Candidates who are interpreters/translators for the languages concerned are entitles access to the programme, subject to the successful completion of a one year "candidature" programme in the Faculty of Arts of UCL. The interpreters/translators for the languages concerned are entitled direct access to the programme, subject to adding a maximum of 150 hours of complementary subjects to the normal cursus.

General structure of the programme

Two year second cycle of university studies ("Licence"), 95 ECTS of study activities and a thesis (25 ECTS), subject to one single final deliberation.

The thesis should be related to a subject matter covered on the programme chosen by the student and approved by the Orientalist Institute Council.

Positioning of the degree within the University cursus

The "licence" progamme in Oriental Languages and Literature : Arabic Language and Islamology, entitle access to the higher study diploma in the Arts.
