Aims

To help students make an in-depth study from a comparative perspective of a particular theme relating to the geographical area known as the Arab World, and to verify their ability to problematise a theme relating to development.

Main themes

Students will be urged to contribute actively by presenting reading notes.
The examination will involve a presentation of written work that will already have been the subject of a discussion during the seminar.

Content and teaching methods

The content will vary from year to year, but the selected theme will usually concern all Arab countries.
The themes considered to be important are:
- fundamentalism, Islamism and political violence (1997-1999);
- state-power-nationalism;
- international migration;
- democracy, civil society and human rights.
Methodology
Attendance at sessions that form part of the seminar is compulsory.
After establishing a work plan and clarifying the general issue, students will seek to analyse the various theoretical aspects of the general issue, enriching it with case studies. The seminar will consist of an open discussion with students about shared reading and particular research work.

Other information (prerequisite, evaluation (assessment methods), course materials recommended readings, ...)

Assessment: This will be based on participation in discussions on the oral presentation of the research, and on the final draft of the "research document".
