Subject choices
Student compose their programme according to their discipline and among the following modules of the training offer:
A. Histoire de l'art
(55 credits)
Student choose one full training module, 1 or 2 (25 credits).
Student choose 30 credits from the whole Art History programme; they preferably choose one of the two complete training modules 3 or 4, plus 10 credits from the whole Art History programme (modules 1 to 5).
Among the 30 credits, it is also possible to choose a course from another UCLouvain Master's programme in agreement with the thesis promoter and the secretary of the jury.

L’étudiant·e choisit 2x10 crédits dans deux modules différents parmi les modules 6 à 9 dont au moins un séminaire dans chacun de ces deux modules.
L’étudiant·e choisit 15 crédits au choix parmi les modules 6 à 10.
L’étudiant·e complète son programme avec min. 5 crédits du module 3 (muséologie et médiation), et 15 crédits au choix parmi les modules 3 à 10, ou parmi ceux d'un autre master de l'UCLouvain, en accord avec le promoteur du mémoire et le secrétaire de jury.

Students should choose one of the following focuses :

Teaching Focus [30.0]
IMPORTANT NOTE: In accordance with article 138 para. 4 of the decree of 7 November 2013 concerning higher education and the academic organisation of studies, teaching practice placements will not be assessed in the September session. Students are required to make every effort to successfully complete the teaching practice in the June session, subject to having to retake the year.
The teaching focus is concerned with preparation for teaching at the higher levels of secondary education.
The programme is designed to develop the following skills:
- design, planning and assessment of practice;
- ability to assess practices and their context;
- understanding of the educational institution, its setting and players.
Three kinds of activities are involved:
- teaching practice at the higher levels of secondary education (60 hours);
- seminars;
- lectures.
They are divided into two categories:
- teaching practice, multidisciplinary courses and seminars, common to all subjects. They have the code LAGRE (13 credits);
- subject-based teaching practice, courses and seminars (17 credits).
The teaching focus of the 120 credit Master’s degree includes the training which leads to the qualification for teaching in secondary education (Agrégation de l'enseignement secondaire supérieur – AESS) (300 hours - 30 credits), in accordance with the Decrees of 8 February 2001 and that of 17 December 2003 (concerning the basis of neutrality) relating to the initial training of teachers at the higher levels of secondary education in the French Community in Belgium.
These 30 credits also make up the AESS programme in Ancient Languages and Literatures: Classics which can be taken after a 60 credit or a 120 credit Master’s degree.
In practical terms, successful completion of the Master’s degree with the teaching focus leads also to the award of professional status as a secondary education teacher. Assessment of the skills in the AESS programme is spread over the 2 years of the Master’s degree.
Students may if they wish combine this focus with an Erasmus or Mercator exchange which must take place either during the 2nd semester of the first year or the 1st semester of the second year. All courses for the teaching focus must, however, be taken at UCLouvain.

Professional Focus: The study of visual cultures and their iconography [30.0]
This focus is designed and offered in addition to section A. Art History.
The objective of this focus is to place the history of art within the broader field of the history of images. The student acquires knowledge about the creation and reception of images from the Middle Ages to the present day. The relationship of images to cultural values linked to political, religious and social issues is examined using, among other methods, sociology and anthropology. The programme deals with a variety of media, their respective contributions to communication strategies and the relationships that are established between them.

Professional Focus : Archaelogical theories, management and sciences [30.0]
This focus is designed and offered in addition to section B. Archaeology.
This focus explores the epistemological and theoretical backgrounds as well as the ways in which archaeology is practised and managed today. In particular, it takes into consideration the social and technical frameworks of the exploitation, circulation and transformation of raw materials, shaped by Man into objects. The course also addresses, through practical cases, the analysis and interpretation of landscapes and the environment, including the exploitation of their resources by ancient societies. This focus also raises consciousness of the issues of investigating the physical traces of recent and present times.

Preparatory Module
(only for students who qualify for the course via complementary coursework)
To access this Master, students must have a good command of certain subjects. If this is not the case, students must take supplementary classes chosen by the faculty to satisfy course prerequisites.
What is a preparatory module?
It is a set of supplementary classes (courses, practical works, seminars, etc.) from the first cycle (see the non-exhaustive list below). The complementary module (maximum 60 credits) is tailor-made by the jury according to the student's educational background and added to the Master’s programme in order to acquire fundamental knowledge to then pursue the 120 credits of the Master’s programme.
