The course deals with the archaeology of Western Europe, highlighting the contribution of the material and environmental sources of Iron Age cultures to contemporary times. The documentation and archaeological practices in Belgium are highlighted within this general framework.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to : | |
| 1 | At the end of the course, the genesis and characteristics of the cultures of each major period of Western history will have been discussed. The student will be able to identify the main material witnesses and place them in the socio-economic context of each period. The student will have become familiar with the organisation and contributions of so-called national archaeology in Belgium and neighbouring countries. |
Content
The course aims to illustrate the contributions of archaeology practised in North-Western Europe, particularly in Belgium. The chronological framework covers, according to resources and the research actuality, the first Iron Age to the contemporary period. The different aspects of ancient societies are addressed: development, technology and crafts, architecture, funerary practices, art, economy.
Teaching methods
Ex cathedra courses with media illustrating excavation practices and some spectacular discoveries.
Evaluation methods
Written exam with iconographic support.

The iconographic support is wholy made available, as well as videograms, chapters from handbooks and an orientation bibliography on the Moodle platform.
