Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of ancient Near Eastern and Mesopotamian societies (course LARKE1553)

Main themes

The course considers in-depth questions and specific problems of interpretation related to the reconstruction of the ways of life and ways of thinking of ancient societies in the Ancient Near East, especially in ancient Iran. More specifically, it will discuss topics such as Median-Achaemenid capitals, Median-Achaemenid cult sites, Elamite archaeology, etc. In addition, the theme of the destruction of cultural heritage in the Near East will also be discussed.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

Advanced training of archaeologists engaged in the archaeology and art history of the Ancient Near East. To develop critical thinking skills and refine knowledge of the methods of analysis of the material culture of the Ancient Near East, in order to understand the modalities of cultural and historical reconstruction.

Different themes related to archaeology, art history and cultural heritage management in the Ancient Near East are covered each year.
