Main themes
The seminar focuses on specific problems of interpretation in relation to the use of archaeological sources for the reconstruction of social and political relations during the Iron Age and the historical period; the geographical context studied covers pre-Roman and Roman Italy, as well as the provinces of the Roman Empire.

Content
The seminar will focus on the ancient city of Ostia, port and gateway to Rome. Several aspects of the site will be analysed, including architecture, urbanism, decorative arts, geomorphology, and the history of a site crucial to the knowledge of Roman civilization.
Teaching methods
The course is structured in a series of lectures alternated with seminar sessions around particular issues presented at the beginning of the seminar. In addition, complementary activities may vary from year to year: taking into account research developed at UCLouvain, students will be required to attend lecture series and to critically analyse them. The seminar may also involve an excursion, coupled with personal research followed by an oral presentation on a city or monument of antiquity. It may also take the form of an in-depth analysis of papers on a specific subject with a presentation (PPT) by the students.
Evaluation methods
Continuous evaluation during the seminar (50% points) and personal paper following a presentation by the student (50%).
