Our story and mission
Where and for whom?
The SMCS is located within the intersectoral LIDAM (Louvain Institute of Data Analysis and Modeling in economics and statistics), where UCLouvain (Belgium)'s statistical research activities are carried out.
The SMCS offers its services (consulting and training) not only to members of the university, but also to public and private organisations and individuals. The training courses offered are recognized as part of UCLouvain's continuing education program and part of the Faculty of Science training program.

How and when?
The SMCS was created in 2007 by the UCLouvain Institute of Statistics. The aim was to provide some expertise and support in the use of statistical methods and software within the institution.
In 2010, the SMCS became an intersectoral technology platform. Today, the Belgian university boasts a whole network of technology platforms that make their expertise and equipment availaible to UCLouvain membres, public and private organisations and individuals.
Why?
The SMCS has multiple missions:
- To provide a network of skills, a methodological support and computational tools that respond to people needs in the use of statistical methods;
- To improve the quality and effectiveness of research and teaching in the field of quantitative methods at UCLouvain;
- To contribute to UCLouvain's mission of service to society.
