Study objectives
The Centre of Drama Studies (located at the Ferme de
Blocry, place de l'Hocaille 4, 1348 Louvain-la-Neuve. Tel. : 010 47 22
72), delivers a second university study cycle diploma '"licence") in two years, in Spectacle Arts,
(orientation : Drama Studies). It does not organise first university
study cycles ("candidatures") : the student should thus have already chosen and completed a first
study cycle or equivalent (see admission conditions, below).
|
The "licence" course completes the study programme
or helps with the reorientation of actors, producers,
scenographers, cultural managers, French teachers and expressive arts
teachers, psychotherapists... It can lead to professions such as drama
critics, playwrights, animators etc.
|
The cursus aims to create a lively and mutually
enriching exchange between research, with its proper university
implications, and incessantly new theatrical creation. Through
contact with "masters", reflection on their own personal experience
and through the exposure to jobs in the theatre that are offered during
the work experience part of the course, the students are encouraged to
create or perfect their professional personality, all the while becoming
initiated into research and university reflections.

Admission conditions
Students holding a Belgian study diploma
|
As the arts "candidat" diploma in Spectacle Arts
is not delivered by any university of the French-speaking Community in Belgium,
the studies entitling access to the "licence" are 'borrowed' from
different study backgrounds.
|
The following people are authorised to follow the "licence" programme in Spectacle Arts, subject to passing the admission
exam :
|
|
-
holders of a university first study cycle ("candidature") or a "licence" diploma
delivered by a university, whatever the qualification of the diploma ;
-
holders of certain diplomas delivered by a higher education establishment, long or short study cycle.
-
students who prove to have a solid professional experience in the domain of Spectacle Arts ;
-
people whose personal assets
in the domain of Spectacle Arts have led to the capacities and
knowledge judged sufficient by the Centre for the successful completion of the
study programme (Diplomas from the Conservatory or Higher Education in
Art).
|
|
All enrolments must be accompanied by an application
mentioning the studies undertaken (together with a photocopy of the
diploma) and/or the work accomplished (file of personal achievements,
to date), as well as three passport photographs. The deadline for
application is 5th September.
|
Students holding a foreign study diploma
|
The diploma must be recognised as being equivalent to a
university or higher education diploma delivered by the French-speaking
Community of Belgium. In the case of this being a higher education
diploma, it must be recognised by the Centre of Drama Studies as
being relevant for the programme organised.
|
The student must introduce his enrolment application to the students' secretary, before the 15th April.
|
Address : Secrétariat des étudiants, Halles Universitaires, Place
de l'Université 1, B-1348 Louvain-la-Neuve. A copy must be given to the Centre of Drama Studies.
|
The student must prove that he has sufficient mastery of the French language.
|
Admission exam
|
An admission exam is held for all candidates around
mid-September. This consists, on the one hand, of an evaluation of the
knowledge of the candidates in the domain of the theatre and
spectacles, their capacities to express themselves, write, summarise
and imagine, and, on the other hand of an evaluation of their
motivation. (Failure in this admission examen will mean having to
successfully complete a whole study year prior to starting the
"licence" programme.
|
Complementary training
|
Complementary training may be imposed on certain
students during the course of their two year "licence" programme,
either in the form of studies or practical work experience. Depending
on the case, this training may be to do with the methodolodgy of
university studies or that of practice in the theatre. The exams on
these complementary subjects will form an integral part of the first
year programme.
|
Admission procedure
See the admission conditions listed below. After passing
the admission exam, the student is invited to register at the
University, using the enrolment authorisation given by
the centre. The enrolment procedures of the University are detailed in
the "General Information" section of the WEB page :
http://www.ucl.ac.be/etudes/programme.html
|
General structure of the programme
The "licence" programme in Spectacle Arts covers two
years of theoretical and practical courses, exercises and
apprenticeships, as well as the presentation of an end of course
thesis. Those students who can justify a professional occupation or
another "licence" followed at the same time, are authorised to
split each year of their studies into two parts, on condition that the
decision was taken prior to enrolment for the study year in question
and
that the Centre Director has given his approval. Under the same
conditions, students who write a thesis drawn on practical
experience from a
year in a cultural institution may be authorised to split the second
year of the programme in two.
|
The course generally takes place from Monday to Thursday
afternoon. The initiation courses into dramatic art, production and
dramatic writing techniques may be organised outside of these periods.

The thesis consists of a personal piece of work proving
the student's capacity to deal correctly with a subjet relating to the
field of research and studies given at the Centre of Dram Studies. This
includes the compulsory writing of a text (42 credits spread over
the two years of the programme).
|
Evaluation
Depending on the subjects, the exam score is based on a
written or oral exam and, in certain cases, on
ongoing assessment and the written and oral work done. The thesis and
the course studies each count for a half during the deliberation of the second
year of the programme.
