Aims

Students will be required to place the major authors and main movements in the history of the French theatre, and identify connections with the big names of theatre around the world.

Main themes

The course traces the major historical phases of French theatre, looking at the main works and the social and cultural conditions in which they were created.
The course is held over two academic years.

Content and teaching methods

Content: 1. From the Middle Ages to Beaumarchais; 2. From the French Revolution to the present day.
Method: Teacher-led course.

15-minute oral exam at the end of the taught course.
