The project “Database and directory of Belgian magistrates” in a nutshell
This database aims to collect the identity cards of thousands of magistrates, to network the actors and to restore the changing institutional context in which they evolve. To this end, the database is structured in four parts:
- The individuals : magistrates and their entourage. Includes five categories of data : personal, socio-professional, relational, intellectual and political.
- The jurisdictions : court identification notice with general information, its place in the hierarchy of courts, the list of functions and the number of places as well as information on the political system, its competences, the type of constituency, its seat, etc.
- The nominations : details each appointment : names of candidates, opinion on each of them, distribution of votes obtained for functions involving a vote, etc. (requires a high level of access).
- The references : the various sources used (archives, publications, articles, standards, parliamentary papers, links, etc.).
For more information, see below “Database structure”.
The application allows both a synchronic (visualization of all or part of the courts and magistrates in operation on a given date or over a given time interval) and a diachronic approach (follow, over a chosen period, the evolution of such a type of court or magistrates).
What do we find there ?
Nowadays, the database includes :
- 6373 individuals (4555 magistrates and 1818 non magistrates)
- 851 jurisdictions
- 142 nominations
- more than 5000 references
