Internal configuration – hippocampus

Hippocampus proper

  • Along the floor of the temporal horn of the lateral ventricle
  • Ventricular surface: thin layer of white matter which collects the axons of the hippocampus, called alveus of the hippocampus
  • Fibres emanating from the alveus constitute the fimbria, which becomes the crus of the fornix

Dentate gyrus

  • Layer of grey matter with a serrate appearance wrapped around the extremity of the
  • Between the hippocampal sulcus and the fimbria
  • Along the fimbria
