Objectives

Introduction

  • Inferior part of the brainstem
  • Flattened truncate cone
  • Between the spinal cord and the pons
  • Connected to the cerebellum via the inferior cerebellar peduncles
  • Contributes to forming the floor of the fourth ventricle
  • Limit between the medulla oblongata and the spinal cord:
    transverse plane passing through the atlanto-occipital articulations and the inferior limit of the decussation of pyramids
  • Limit between the medulla oblongata and the pons:
    sulcus (clearly marked on the anterior surface) at the level of the middle part of the basilar part of the occipital bone
  • Inferior part (1/4): in the space between the foramen magnum and the superior edge of the posterior arch of C1
  • Superior part (3/4): in the foramen magnum and the posterior cranial fossa, on the inferior half of the basilar part of the occipital bone
  • Axis: 35° tilted forward
