"Speech and language therapists work in the field of communication and language therapy. They intervene in disorders involving speech, the voice and oral and written language, whatever their origin, in children, adolescents, adults and elderly people." (The Permanent Liaison Committee for Speech Therapists of

the European Union, a European grouping of national professional associations in the European Union).

The programme provides the psychological, medical, linguistic and methodological foundations relevant to speech and language therapy. It develops the necessary skills to analyze the complexity of human behaviour, relationships and situations with their biological and sociocultural aspects. To be able to go on to the Master in speech and language therapy, students must :
- acquire the knowledge (medical, psychological, linguistic, sociocultural and philosophical), concepts and theories which underpin this analysis;
- develop critical analytical skills of their implications and conditions of use in patients;
- have good oral and written communication skills, including in English ;
- acquire the methodologies necessary to practise the profession.

Assessment is through written or oral examinations held during the examination sessions.

The programme for the Bachelor in Psychology and Education : Speech and Language Therapy is an inter-university programme with a total of 180 credits spread over three years. The 60 credits for the first year are shared with the programme for the Bachelor in Psychology and Education. The second year includes 15 special credits for speech and language therapy shared with ULB. The third year is organized jointly with ULB.

In addition to the components which are shared with the programme from the Bachelor in Psychology and Education, the programme is made up of courses on oral and written language, the ENT sphere, neuroscience and related disciplines.

In view of the kind of professional activities which the degree prepares for, fluency in French is an essential requirement. Apart from the ability to write and speak correctly, students are also expected to have good spelling in French.

Le programme de bachelier en sciences psychologiques : orientation logopédie est constitué de cours magistraux accompagnés, pour certains, de travaux pratiques en individuel ou en groupe. L'accent est mis sur le caractère pluridisciplinaire de la formation (psychologie, médecine, linguistique), en veillant à respecter les standards européens de formation universitaire de 1er cycle dans le domaine de la logopédie. 

En BAC1, les activités organisées dans le cadre du monitorat fournissent un support à la réussite. En BAC2, des activités sont organisées pour aider les étudiants à se mettre à niveau en maîtrise de la langue. Certains cours sont dispensés par des cliniciens experts. Un conseiller aux études est disponible pour aider les étudiants à gérer leur parcours académique. 

Une attention particulière est accordée aux évaluations des étudiants effectuées dans les comités d'année.

Les étudiants de 3ème année ont la possibilité d’accomplir une partie de leur formation à l’étranger.

Quelles sont les possibilités ?

Students who gain a Bachelor’s degree may go on to the Master in Speech and Language Therapy without any further conditions.

Access to the three other Masters organized by the Faculty (Psychology, Education, Family and Sexuality Studies) is also possible: the Academic Secretary must approve the application and additional training will be required.
