Main themes The course is designed to introduce students to the different levels of research, with emphasis on, first, developing the capacity to summarize and to examine in depth through direct contact with the scientific literature on psychology and education and, second, a specific programme on the methodology of university work (optional). The teaching also includes the practical psychology work which provides first degree students with the opportunity to discover the wide variety of scientific work carried out in the faculty by participating in various research experiments.
Aims This course in psychology tutoring takes place over the whole year and comprises two parts : A. A first look at academic publications from different sectors of psychology and education which is designed to : 1) familiarize students with experimental research by making them participate as subjects in different research studies undertaken in the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences 2) introduce students to an approach which closely allies rigour in scientific research and disciplinary material from psychology 3) develop an analytical sense and provide training in writing summaries 4) give students practice in logical reasoning and the critical examination of a text or a piece of information. B. Experimentation in a methodology appropriate for university level studies. These compulsory sessions are designed to : 1) highlight all the factors which play a role in adapting to university life 2) help students understand what they are required to do : what kind of work should they produce to succeed in their studies? 3) enable students to acknowledge their strengths and weakness, and to put them in the context of their project and what the university expects of them 4) help students find the appropriate ways to enable them to achieve their own objectives.
Content 1. Academic publications Students select an article from a review or a collection of articles on which they are required to produce a summary which conforms to the specific guidelines on the standard organization of an academic report. The texts are given to the coordinator and students are invited to present their work at a meeting in small groups led by one of the lecturers. 2. Practical psychology work First degree students are required to spend a total of 300 minutes (or 5 hours) as a research subject in a study at the Faculty. 3. Methodology of university work This programme includes workshops on lectures and study planning during the first semester and on preparation for the revision period and the January examinations (first part) as well as on an analysis of the first semester, the lectures and the organization of individual work (second part).
