Main themes |
- Critical presentation of the current main methods in anthropological research
- Definition of basic concepts such as "culture", "system", "social relations", " acculturation ", "participant observation" etc. while also developing a synchronic frame of reference (intercultural comparisons) and a diachronic one (intracultural comparisons in time)
- Development, illustrated through topics (e.g. family, death, insanity etc.) of four main issues :
a) the diversity of cultures and the nature of this diversity
b) cultural causality and determination as irreducible dimensions of man
c) the relationship between what is cultural and psychological
d) the way in which different schools have tackled these key questions
c) the relationship between the cultural and the psychic
d) how these major themes have been considered by various schools.

Aims |
- To draw up a transcultural frame of reference to enable psychology students to place the theories and practices encountered in the course.
- To provide a coherent overview of the major themes which form the main trends in anthropological thinking.
