International political studies are designed to provide students with an in-depth knowledge of the world environment in which they are citizens. From villages to the United Nations, from negotiations between states to the role of non-governmental organizations, from the geopolitics of power to the management of international crises, from humanitarian intervention to peaceful resolution of conflict, nothing which drives politics in international relations should be unfamiliar to students who have completed this programme.
In addition to the core subjects of political science, the training provides students with the essential elements with which to analyze international life and to build on their existing knowledge in the politico-institutional, historical, economic and perhaps even socio-anthropological fields. The interpretation of diplomatic and strategic questions is also enhanced by study of approaches and methods in international negotiations, international relations theory and Foreign policy analysis (FPA).
At the end of the first year, students may choose to diversify their knowledge, either through research in international relations, or to preparing for an international career (e.g.diplomacy, government service, non-governmental organizations) by developing special expertise in an area of international policy or conflict resolution. During the second year, the emphasis is on political analysis, with numerous case studies from different parts of the world.
Training is also offered in the field of humanitarian action. This is done in a multi-disciplinary way, from a post-crisis reconstruction perspective. This training provides analysis and global understanding of conflict and situations where humanitarian intervention is needed.
The programme of the first year of the 120 credit Master in Political Science (International Relations) comprises a broad range of core subjects (45 credits), optional subjects (13 credits) and preparation for the dissertation (2 credits). The core subjects include advanced political science courses as well as courses and seminars devoted to international relations and humanitarian action. The programme director will want to ensure that the subjects students choose from the list of core subjects (45 credits out of a total of 65) are relevant to their focus and may not validate certain subjects for this reason.
2 credits out of 20 are allocated to the preparation of the dissertation. Students are required to provide a reasoned account of the research topic, a preliminary bibliography on the topic in question as well as a suggested work plan, together with a schedule showing when the different stages will be completed.
The list of optional subjects (13 credits out of a total of 25 credits) includes regional analysis or advanced language lessons.
The second year programme is made up of focuses worth 30 credits (research focus, professional focus in diplomacy and conflict resolution and professional focus in humanitarian action) ; 18 credits (out of a total of 20 credits) are given for writing the dissertation; 12 credits (out of a total of 25 credits) are for optional subjects which complement those taken in the first year.
Wathever the focus or the options chosen, the programme of this master shall totalise 120 credits, spread over two years of studies each of 60 credits
Finalités
Courses which have not already been taken may be added to the Master study programme (up to a maximum of 15 credits). It is up to the programme director to agree the equivalences between different courses. If the total of prerequisite subjects is more than 15 credits, entry to the Master programme is conditional on the successful completion of a preparatory year and gaining a maximum of 60 credits.

Specific procedures :
The Master in Political Science (International Relations) has introduced an admission committee formed of academics and scientists involved in the programme. Under thechairmanship of the programme director, it is their role to deal with questions relating to admission and, from time to time, to assess the quality of the programme.
Requests for admission and for further information should be addressed to the programme director (C. Herman).
Requests for exemption and equivalences between courses and personalized entry are subject to the agreement of the programme director from whom agreement for each individual programme must also be sought.
Strong points of the pedagogical approach
Methods which reflect interdisciplinarity
Most of the teaching staff on the programme have backgrounds in two, sometimes three different areas which encourages contacts and approaches of an interdisciplinary kind. The very nature of international relations makes them a field for interdisciplinary research, aided by various transnational networks.
Variety of teaching strategies (including e-learning)
Most of the teaching staff are familiar with new multi-media technology and innovations introduced by the University Teaching and Multimedia Institute (Institut de pédagogie universitaire et des multimédias - IPUM). The overall rhythm and workload of the programme is carefully coordinated each year.
The geographical and subject range of the optional courses reflects the outward looking nature of the course and the diversity of the teaching.
The seminars are designed to give students support in the methodology of their individual project, whether in the research or professional focus.
Different learning situations
Courses, seminars, exercises, lectures, competitive examination simulations and learning to work in academic networks are all evidence of the multidisciplinary nature of the programme.
The professional focus in Humanitarian Action is designed to develop a global approach to so-called humanitarian crisis situations and post-crisis situations. The teaching staff have different academic backgrounds e.g. political science, anthropology, law, health, management and development). There is emphasis on learning how to work individually and in groups as well as using e-learning. Students must also do a work placement during the second year of the Master.
This is done on an annual basis, course by course, and is organised by the academic staff in charge of the programme and discussed by the Master Committee. Diplomats and members of NGOs may also take part in this process.
The professional focus in Humanitarian Action is part of the group formed in 1993 by a consortium of European universities under the aegis of the Network on Humanitarian Action (NOHA) and in collaboration with the European Community Humanitarian Aid department (ECHO). It is also one of the programmes supported by the Erasmus Mundus scheme. This gives a strong international element to the programme, allowing it to be entitled European Master in International Humanitarian Action.
Students may take advantage of the possibilities for exchange visits with the six other universities in the network.
Under the Erasmus Mundus scheme, research may be done at partner universities outside the European Union.
Under another initiative, links have been established with doctoral students and the network of the Centre for the Study of Crisis and International Conflict (Centre d'études des Crises et des Conflits internationaux – CECRI)
