Aims

The students must assimilate the fine points of the distinction between "scholarly" art and "popular art" and be able to apply them to concrete cases. The conceptual tools at their disposal will allow them to distinguish between the major categories of marginal art.

Content and teaching methods

Definitions of popular art associated with folklore and the history of art. Study of works and texts illustrating concepts of popular art in semantics, including naïve art, crude art, marginal art, primitive art, and kitsch. Collective surveys and individual work.
