Master in Theology [120.0]

AnnéesTravail de fin d'étude

Retour en début de pageStudy objectives

The Master in Theology provides in-depth training in the various fields of theology (exegesis, historical, dogmatic, ethical, pastoral) whilst also offering either research training in a specific field (research focus) or teacher training (teaching focus). In each field, the student is invited to approach a specific subject in an in-depth manner, in connection with significant current issues, in order to learn how to take a rigorous approach to his work and develop a critical mind. A selection of activities help him not just to learn more about the speciality he has chosen but also to consider other issues and training programmes which tie in with his areas of interest (e.g.: Master in Biblical Studies, Master in Sciences of Religions).

Retour en début de pageGeneral presentation of the programme

The core courses (90 credits) must include a dissertation, one seminar in heuristics and one in theological integration. The other activities cover the diverse areas of theological studies and are offered in the form of biennial courses. Each student puts together his programme by following the grids below. He also reserves one of the two focuses available (research or teaching) for a total of 30 credits.
Each student’s programme will amount to at least 60 credits per year.
It must be approved by the Chair of the Faculty Masters Committee (TEBI).
Any student who so wishes may, with the consent of the aforementioned Chair, replace the activities included in his programme with equivalent activities which feature in the Masters programme offered by KULeuven (Faculteit Godgeleerdheid). The total number of activities followed at Leuven must not exceed 20 credits. Once he has exceeded 20 credits, the student is invited to enroll in the exchange programme which features in the agreement between the two faculties.

Wathever the focus or the options chosen, the programme of this master shall totalise 120 credits, spread over two years of studies each of 60 credits

Core courses of the Master in Theology

The student chooses one of the two focuses proposed:

Teaching Method

Retour en début de pageStrong points of the pedagogical approach

The core courses are designed in such a way as to promote an interdisciplinary approach to theology. For these main activities, the syllabi allow for interaction between teaching and research, which should help students, including those on the teaching focus, to acquaint themselves with research in the various fields of theology.
By selecting one of the 5 programmes of study in the research focus, the student will not get lost in a sea of different methodology (Biblical exegesis, history, dogmatic, ethical or pastoral thought), but rather focus his training on one area, so as to reach a high enough level to think about undertaking doctoral research. In this case, teacher support can be more personalised, as learning about the specific methodology of a theological discipline is anchored in research seminars where methodology specific to the discipline gives way to practical exercises which are subject to formative evaluations.
For the teaching focus, the scale of the core courses (which, with the dissertation, amount to 90 credits) means that learning about being a teacher is not to the detriment of solid basic training in the various theological disciplines and their own methods.
The interdiscipilinarity between the different domains of theology (as well as with philosophy and human sciences) is furthered specifically in the two general seminars (THEO2110 'De l'heuristique à la communication scientifique en théologie' [1st year] and THEO2000 'Séminaire d’intégration théologique' [2nd year]). In the various disciplines, interdisciplinarity is of a structural nature: for example, Biblical exegesis links philology, l'history and literary theory; dogmatic theology and ethics address philosophy, the history of thought and various human sciences;

Retour en début de pageEvaluation

The modes of evaluation are laid out in the syllabi for each activity. For the seminars, formative evaluation is foreseen.
Evaluation can be carried out in the form of a traditional oral or written exam or written work with formative evaluation.
In the second year of the Master, all research focus activities (including the activity included in the core courses of the specialisation chosen by the student) will be subject to a single evaluation to check, at the end of the second master, the student's skills in research via a “examen de maturité” (literal translation: maturity exam) in the theological discipline concerned. This evaluation will also assess written work drafted at the end of the research seminars in the second year. As with the dissertation, the marks for this evaluation will be weighted to reflect the effective importance as compared to other exams.

Internationalisation

International contacts
For UCL theology students, Erasmus exchanges, authorised at the bachelor stage, are encouraged at Master level. Moreover, exchanges with the faculties of theology at KULeuven, Strasbourg University and the Université catholique de Lyon are particularly promoted.

International attraction
In French-speaking Europe, this masters programme is only recognised by public authorities at UCL, the Université Marc Bloch de Strasbourg and the Université de Fribourg (CH). Furthermore, it provides students wilthe the opportunity to obtain a 'licence canonique en théologie' (Sacrae theologiae licentiatus) if they meet the requirements to do so (see page). ). This opportunity attracts many ecclesiastical students from developing countries.
As well as a partnership agreement with the theology faculty at KULeuven, the faculty is developing international contacts to promote privileged partnerships at the level of its École doctorale thématique (THEODOC; this partnerships will ultimately have a positive knock-on effect on the way the Master is organised.

Teaching Focus [30.0]
The Masters 120 teaching focus is true to its word: it provides initial teacher training for higher level secondary teachers in the French Community of Belgium. More specifically, it includes the training ' Agrégation de l’enseignement secondaire supérieur' (AESS, 300h – 30 credits) leading to a diploma, in rerference to the decrees of 8 February, 2001 and 17 December, 2003 on the foundations of neutrality. In concrete terms, passing the teaching focus' of a master leads to the student obtaining the teaching focus master and the professional title 'agrégé de l'enseignement secondaire supérieur'.
At the end of his/her training, the student will have acquired skills relating to :
• the various functions of teaching ;
• thinking about, planning and evaluating practices;
• thinking about practices and their context ;
• understanding and analysing the school as an institution, its context and key players.
There are three types of activity :
• internships in higher secondary education (60h) ;
• seminars ;
• lectures.
Teaching is split into two categories :
• transversal interships, courses and seminars, common to all disciplines. They bear the code AGRE (13 credits ) ;
• internships, courses and seminars specific to the discipline(s) (17 credits ).
In the master en théologie, didactical research on teaching religion is not the subject of a specific course; rather, it unfolds in various teaching activities ("didactique de l’enseignement religieux", religious courses and seminars). Students can write their dissertation for the master in 'didactique de la religion'.
