The four universities of the Louvain Academy (UCL, FUNDP, FUCaM and FUSL) have created a school of management, the Louvain School of Management (LSM). It is the largest school of management in Belgium with over 1,200 Master students and more than 200 lecturers and guest lecturers. Alongside the International Executive MBA and the doctoral school programmes, the Louvain School of Management organizes different joint Masters in Management Science programmes in each of the partner universities. UCL provides the Master in Business Engineering (120), the Master in Management Science (120), the Master in Management (60) over a year, available as a day course and also on a part-time basis over two years.

Firmly rooted in the world of business, these Masters enable students to build up their own "à la carte" programme or to specialize through a very wide selection of option courses. Certain option courses are entirely in English. This programme also enables them to gain an introduction to the epistemological, methodological and theoretical foundations of management research, giving them good preparation for doing doctoral research.

This two year programme is mainly designed for bachelors in economy or management. It aims to provide the skills and know-how which will enable them to get posts in management in private and public organizations.

There is special emphasis on the development of skills which will enable students to  :

1.      put theories and concepts of management into effective and competent use in a professional setting ;

2.      put organizations into their socio-economic and institutional context in order to understand the interdependences between organization and environment and translate them into management decisions;

3.      to take account of the challenges of  global competition in the practical application of socially responsible management techniques.

In the same way as other students of the Louvain School of Management, future Masters in Management Science will :

  • demonstrate initiative and autonomy in decision-taking  (teaching methods geared to problem resolution);
  • have practical experience of business (work placement and classes with many entrepreneurs and managers);
  • have developed the ability to work in an international environment     and
  • be familiar with team work.

The programme is made up of courses with a professional or research focus, special subjects , an exchange programme as well as a dissertation, a work placement and compulsory courses from the core subjects of the programme. During the first year, students attend courses linked to the professional or research focus and to the specialized option  courses. The exchange and the core subjects are done in the second year.

In the first year, students first choose a professional or research focus worth 30 credits:

  • The professional focus develops skills in management functions. There is a group of advanced management coursesin French and English.
  • The research focus is designed for students who wish to prepare for a doctorate in management science or a wider field and to gain an introduction to methods and areas of basic and applied research in management.

Students must also choose two option courses for 15 credits each in the same special subject which will enable them to specialize in a cross-disciplinary or functional area. Certain option courses are entirely in English (EN), others partly in English and partly in French (EN/FR). Certain special subjects are available at the Louvain-la-Neuve campus whilst others are at Mons and Namur. Students who do not wish to specialize will only be able to choose from the basic option courses from each special subject of the Louvain School of Management (LLN-Mons-Namur).

Among the special subjects available at Louvain-la-Neuve from which the student can choose are : Business Finance (EN/FR), Strategic Marketing (EN/FR), Human Resource Management (FR), Entrepreneurship (EN/FR), European Business (EN), Economics of Strategy and Innovation (EN). UCL students from the LSM may also take advantage of the additional option courses available at the School’s partner universities : Service Management (FUNDP-Namur), Commercial law (FUNDP-Namur),  Market Finance (FUNDP-Namur), Operational Marketing (FUNDP-Namur) , Portfolio Management (FUCaM-Mons), Audit and Accounting (FUCaM-Mons), Advanced Methods in Marketing (FUCaM-Mons).

During the second year, students may do an exchange visit worth 30 credits to pursue their specialization. Depending on the subjects chosen in the first year, students may also finish   off their training by gaining the Master in International Management during the second year, or spend a whole year at one of our partner universities offering “double degrees": Universität zu Köln, Helsinki School of Economics, Fundaçao Getulio Vargas, Brazil.
Students who are not doing the exchange visit may choose a selection of courses from the option courses available for the Master in Management Science. (120).

Students must also devote 30 credits to:

  • a dissertation: either a project-dissertation enabling the student to make a contribution to the solution of a real problem which occurs or could occur in one or more organizations (see www.uclouvain.be/8155.html for further information), or a research dissertation for the research focus;
  • a business placement. This is not necessarily linked to the dissertation or a research placement in one of the Louvain School of Management’s centres of excellence;
  • a course on corporate social responsibility
  • a seminar on current economic and management issues.
